Job Summary: 

Working closely with research & development, laboratory operations, and quality assurance, the Equipment Engineer is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and compliance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment used in genomics research and clinical testing. The Equipment Engineer partners with laboratory staff, quality teams, and vendors to troubleshoot issues, implement preventive maintenance programs, and support the integration of new technologies. nd contributing to the laboratory’s regulatory readiness. This role supports laboratory operations by overseeing equipment lifecycle management, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives and partners with laboratory scientists, operations staff, and vendors to maintain equipment readiness and ensure that laboratory instrumentation meets regulatory, quality, and safety standards.

 

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

 

  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment and instrumentation to identify faults and potential issues. 
  • Execute and/or support Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) protocols for new and existing equipment.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate repairs with internal resources or external vendors.
  • Perform technical repairs of laboratory instrumentation and subsequent repair verifications/qualifications. 
  • Respond rapidly to equipment failures to minimize disruption of laboratory operations.
  • Partner with laboratory operations to monitor equipment utilization and performance metrics.
  • Analyze equipment performance data to identify trends, recommend, and implement upgrades, modifications, or replacements to enhance laboratory efficiency and capacity.
  • Support the introduction and validation of new instruments and emerging technologies.
  • Collaborate with validation teams to ensure integrity in equipment and system validation.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and traceability for all qualification activities.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in compliance with CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189, and internal quality system requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing equipment-related documentation and acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for equipment troubleshooting and optimization.
  • Initiate and support deviation investigations and corrective/preventive actions (CAPAs) related to equipment performance issues.
  • Collaborate with QA/QC and Lab Operations to assess equipment-related risks and implement controls to minimize measurement uncertainty.
  • Train lab staff on proper handling, usage, and storage of calibrated equipment to prevent misuse and drift.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.

 

Travel: Travel may be required to attend meetings or visit manufacturing sites. <10% travel is anticipated.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of electronics principles, digital and analog systems, programing and troubleshooting techniques and ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment specifications.
  • Fine motor skills and experienced dexterity needed for frequent hands-on work with sensitive and high-value instruments such as NGS sequencers, pipettes, balances, incubators, thermocyclers, and automated liquid handlers.
  • Strong analytical skills in diagnosing complex instrumentation or system issues and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Ability to write, interpret, and follow SOPs and work instructions aligned with regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient in maintaining accurate, complete, and compliant records of calibration events, verification reports, and maintenance logs.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements such as CLIA, CAP, FDA, ISO 15189, and GLP/GMP.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate across departments, document procedures, and present technical findings to both scientific and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable with managing change in a dynamic lab environment with shifting priorities, new technologies, and growth demands.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

 

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work in environmental conditions typical in office and/or clinical laboratory environments.
  • Time split between laboratory areas and office or meeting spaces, depending on active projects.
  • Fine motor skills and experienced dexterity needed for frequent hands-on work with sensitive and high-value instruments such as NGS sequencers, pipettes, balances, incubators, thermocyclers, and automated liquid handlers.
  • Occasional after-hours or weekend support may be required to troubleshoot critical instrumentation or oversee time-sensitive projects.
  • Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and eye protection when in lab areas.
  • Frequent movement between labs, equipment storage areas, and maintenance benches; must be able to lift or move equipment up to ~25–50 lbs. occasionally.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience working with laboratory instrumentation in a clinical, research, or biotechnology environment.
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting of genomics-related equipment (e.g., sequencers, liquid handlers, PCR machines, centrifuges).
  • Experience in a genomics, molecular diagnostics, or high-throughput lab is highly preferred.

 

Education:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, or related field), Life Sciences with technical instrumentation focus, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting base pay for this role is between $125,000 - $135,000. The actual base pay includes many factors, and is subject to change and modification in the future.  This position may also be eligible for other types of compensation and benefits.
 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Accountabilities: 

  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment and machinery to identify faults and potential issues. 
  • Troubleshoot equipment and machinery to diagnose malfunctions and determine the appropriate course of action. 
  • Repair or replace defective electronic parts, such as sensors, switches, circuit boards, and wiring, using hand tools, soldering equipment, and diagnostic software. 
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability if necessary. 
  • Collaborate with clinical laboratory staff to improve workflows and process improvements via new equipment or utilizing existing equipment 
  • Document maintenance activities, including repairs, replacements, and preventive maintenance tasks, accurately and comprehensively. 
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while working with electronic equipment and machinery. 
  • Stay updated on advancements in electronic/automation technology and participate in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge. 
  • Ability to run and provide basic programing of automated equipment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • 2-5 years in a technical field related to equipment maintenance or related Job experience and genomics and/or clinical laboratory knowledge. 
  • Engineer or science based bachelors degree. 

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong understanding of electronics principles, digital and analog systems, programing and troubleshooting techniques. 
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles and the use of basic hand tools for troubleshooting and repair.   
  • Knowledge of fluid dispensing/mixing, programming and electrical systems. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. 
  • Proficient in reading blueprints, schematics, and specification sheets. 
  • Able to communicate and coordinate tasks through to implementation. 
  • Understanding of lean processes. 
  • Minimum of three years of machine/electronics maintenance experience in a medical device/pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. 
  • Minimum of two years of Laboratory work experience in Genomics. 
  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, safety requirements for machines and facilities. 

 

Work Environment: 

  • Occasional lifting of up to 35 kilograms may be required. 

Ability to work in uncomfortable positions, when required. For example, when repairing various manufacturing equipment.
