A F Howland Associates Limited (AFHA) is a well-established geotechnical and geo-environmental consultancy company with two cost centres based in the South East of England. Our head office is located in Norwich, Norfolk and we have a subsidiary office in Long Mefford, Suffolk.  Further London and Central UK offices are in progress.  From these cost centres/offices we operate nationally on infrastructure, utilities frameworks, small to large developments on both greenfield and brownfield projects throughout the UK. We specialise in the installation of high quality geotechnical and environmental instrumentation for monitoring civil engineering and infrastructure works, ground gas assessment & water quality. We are experts in trenchless construction and have developed out own industry approved software for data processing and assessment to simplify, and improve the delivery of geotechnical & environmental risk assessment.

About the Roles

AFHA is currently looking for full time Geo-Environmental and Geotechnical Engineers to assist with our growing workload in the Infrastructure & Utilities sector. Your role, as Geotechnical / Geo-Environmental Engineer, would be supervision of site based activities reporting to the Fieldwork Manager. As a core member of the team, you will be expected to work within this team, sometimes autonomously and deliver on works (mostly field based but also office based) as scheduled. You will work closely with the Engineers and Senior Engineers to ensure that the fieldwork that you will be supervising is carried out to the highest standards. As a key member of the team, the ideal candidate will be comfortable delivering under pressure.

Who Should Apply

We seek individuals with a minimum of an undergraduate degree in one of the following; Earth Science, Engineering Geology or Geotechnics to join our growing fieldwork teams. You should have a desire to work in the geotechnical and geo-environmental sector and want to develop abilities in fieldwork supervision in order to gain the experience necessary to enable factual and interpretive report writing. The ideal candidate should have first or second class degree with a post graduate masters (not essential but desirable) and enjoy working in a fast paced environment where adaptability and flexibility is key to success. As a key member of the team, the ideal candidate will be comfortable working outdoors & delivering under pressure and have 1-3 years’ experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervision of intrusive site works in the field including; cable percussive drilling, windowless sampling, Rotary drilling, trial pitting and insitu testing
  • Completion of project H&S documentation in the field and in the office
  • Liaising with clients 
  • Onsite Project Management
  • Monitoring and sampling of installed standpipes for ground gas and water level / quality
  • Supervising the installation of new monitoring standpipes
  • Travel – regular travel within the region and throughout the UK required

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Suitable qualification/experience in Geoscience, Engineering or Geo-Environmental/Geotechnical related discipline
  • Valid CSCS card (preferable but not essential)
  • 1 to 3 years’ experience with Geotechnical/Environmental supervision would be advantageous.
  • Ability to problem solve in the field and communicate site feedback to the fieldwork manager and senior engineers to ensure continuous improvement/development
Essential Requirements:
  • Full UK Driving licence
  • IT literacy (MS packages)
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Right to work in UK
