Title: Elementary School RN at Berryton Elementary School
Schedule: 7.5 hours per day / 190 days per year
Reports to: Health Services Team Leader/School Nurse/Principal
Purpose and Objectives of the Position: The School Nurse works to strengthen the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students by the prevention of illness and disability with early detection and appropriate community referrals. Serving as health advocate for all students, the School Nurse will identify and assist in the removal of health related barriers to the learning process. The School Nurse will carry out nursing activities as defined by the Kansas State Nurse Practice Act.
Develop and Implement Health Plans:
- Interprets the health status of students to school personnel.
- Initiates referrals to parents and community agencies.
- Provides on-going health counseling.
Provide Health Assessments:
- Obtains a health and developmental history.
- Screens for vision and hearing as required by the State.
- Observes students for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis.
Participate as the Health Team Specialist on the Education Team:
- Liaison for parents and physician.
- Develops protocol for students with special health needs.
Promote and Assist in Control of Communicable Diseases:
- Review student health records.
- Early detection.
- Report contagious disease to appropriate health agency.
Develop Procedures for Crisis Intervention for Acute Illness, Injury and Emotional Disturbances:
- Member of individual school crisis team.
Provide Health Education:
- Serve as a resource person for the classroom teacher with health related topics.
- Counsels with students concerning health issues.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Preferred College Degree from an accredited university with a BS in Nursing.
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas.
- Current knowledge of primary health care theory and practices.
- Current knowledge of basic human physical and psychosocial needs
- Ability to apply primary health care techniques to specific patient situations.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to follow detailed written and verbal directions.
- Possession of a valid Class C Kansas Driver’s License.
- Additional licenses or certifications may be required.
- Ability to observe and follow district policies at all times.
- Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
- Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Must verify good health by passing a physical examination that includes TB and drug test as required.
- Performs other duties assigned.
- Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
- Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.
