About the Department
Position Duties
- Oversees the procedural execution of the central criminal records operation in the Sheriff's Department
- Supervises, trains and evaluates Records Processing Supervisors
- Directs and manages accurate and timely entry of criminal record data such as arrest records and departmental reports on required local, state and national databases
- Monitors accurate identification of arrested individuals through proper use of Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)
- Ensures proper documentation and storage of all criminal records in the Sheriff's Department such as arrest records, fingerprint cards, photographs and court dispositions
- Oversees accessibility of criminal records to appropriate parties to ensure confidentiality and proper security procedures
- Testifies in court on matters related to criminal records and fingerprint processing procedures
- Develops and monitors section budget
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or closely related field, and five (5) years criminal records management experience including three (3) years supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Considerable knowledge of records management procedures; considerable knowledge of the Texas Open Records Act; professional knowledge/experience of fingerprint systems, fingerprinting techniques, and criminal information databases
- Skill in managing supervisory staff; skill in applying appropriate records management procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to compile and analyze data; ability to operate personal computer and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, other government agencies, news media, other County employees and the general public
- Must secure and maintain favorable background investigations from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
- Must obtain Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Fingerprint Science Certification
- Must have Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIS), Texas and National Criminal Information Center (TCIC/NCIC) and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) Certifications within one (1) year of hire or less per administrative direction
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Working environments are in an office within a jail environment
- Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5-10 lbs., occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard, typewriter and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, walking, reaching and handling to perform the essential functions
