About the Department

The City of Pasadena is currently seeking a dependable, proactive, and detailed oriented Public Works Maintenance Worker III who will provide skilled maintenance work in the Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. The current vacancy is in our Street Maintenance Division (Traffic Signs and Paint), which performs traffic striping/painting and regulatory sign maintenance work throughout the city.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be a technical expert in their field with supervisory experience in traffic signage and traffic paint striping, preferably in the public sector. This person will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good attitude, time management skills, and boundless energy, as well as a strong work ethic. He or she will follow directions well, be highly reliable, enjoy teamwork, and take the initiative to complete work diligently, completely, and to a high standard of performance.

Position Duties

  • Operates paint striper (lane striper); installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces street name signs, regulatory signs, warning signs, and guide signs.
  • Oversees and performs a variety of street painting and striping work, including the painting of crosswalks, curbs, street markings, and installation of raised pavement markers.
  • Prepares layouts of intersections, crosswalks, and cat-track lane-lines for striping.
  • Airless paint sprayers and drives light and heavy vehicles and equipment; maintains tools inventory, records, and equipment in good working order, including airless and air paint sprayers, paint striper, hydraulic paint spray truck, forklift, and jack hammer.
  • Complies with and enforces operating and safety procedures.
  • Assists in hiring, training, scheduling, timecard monitoring, and evaluating employees.    
  • Knowledgeable of traffic control measures to create safe work zones.
  • Prepares streets, parks, recreation areas, parking lots, Rose Bowl, and other public facilities for parades and other special events.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with coworkers, supervisors, staff, vendors, contractors, volunteers, and the public.
  • Leads the activities of subordinates under the general direction of a Public Works Maintenance Crew Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three years of journey level experience in traffic striping/painting and regulatory sign maintenance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in the operation of paint stripers (lane striper), airless and air paint sprayers, hydraulic paint spray trucks, and sign installation equipment.
  • Heavy equipment experience to include a forklift and poinjar rock/hammer drill or similar equipment.   Ability to read and understand blueprints and work orders.
  • IMSA Certifications in Signs and Paints and Traffic Control are highly desirable.
  • One year of lead worker or supervisory experience is a plus.

SELECTION PROCESS

The tentative selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation, a written exam or interview panel, and a department-level interview.

VACANCIES

There is currently one vacancy is in the Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. As a result of the selection process, an eligible list will be established which will be used to fill this vacancy and other similar vacancies that may occur in the future. Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.

Other Qualifications

Incumbents in this classification may be rotated among the various public works maintenance operations.

The work shift may include weekends and holidays on a rotating or permanent basis and night shift when assigned to special events on overtime.

Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver's License within six months of hire and as a condition of continued employment.

Enrollment in approved college-level public works and supervisory courses will be required within six months of appointment and are to be continued until a minimum of nine college units have been completed. (Proof of satisfactory completion of these courses will be required.)

Ability to use hand and power tools, operate and maintain light and heavy equipment, physical strength, and agility to lift to 60 lbs., bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 60 lbs.
