About the Department

DEPARTMENTAL PROMOTION


The purpose of this position is to provide timely and accurate processing of financial transactions in accordance with accounting principles, City and Department policies. 

Position Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business
  • Oversees collection of property taxes and reconciles on a daily and monthly basis.
  • Prepares tax relief documents for the elderly, applies rules, laws and procedures from the State.
  • Attends annual training on state laws. 
  • Trains tax accounting clerks on new and changing legislation.
  • Oversees collection of business license applications and collection of minimal activity licenses; ensures business license audits.
  • Acts as backup for Tax/Licensing Supervisor.
  • Works directly with citizens or customers either in person, over the phone, or through other communication channels.
  • Reviews data to ensure proper entries and payments.
  • Works with a variety of software, including, but not limited to, billing or cash receipt software and financial software.
  • Works in a variety of accounting processes, including but not limited to accounts payable, petty cash, and accounts receivable.
  • Assists with the city’s daily cash balancing processes by performing daily cash drawer balance processes and confirming receipts against applicable software systems. 
  • Provides customer service to internal and external customers by answering questions, researching information, and handling a variety of issues. 
  • Actively listens to understand and meet customer needs.
  • Works with other departments and government agencies and follows State code and policies as required.  
  • Assists with training Accounting Clerk I and II staff and/or cross-training within the Finance Department on all aspects of property taxes, business licensing, and any additional assignments as needed.
  • Performs other work as assigned.


Physical Demands:

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, and sustained keyboard operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum of two years of experience in the Accounting Clerk II position OR 
  • Meets all the education and experience requirements of an Accounting Clerk II, plus 
  • Two additional years of property tax or business license experience.
