Job purpose
The employee is responsible for all activities involving maintenance and operation of the plant utilities inclusive of the following ammonia refrigeration system, HVAC, boiler systems, hot water generator, compressed air systems, building sprinkler systems and all supporting equipment.
Duties and responsibilities
- Maintains the following equipment Ammonia refrigeration system, building heating and air conditioning equipment, boiler systems, hot water generator, compressed air systems, building sprinkler systems, and any other supporting equipment as directed by management.
- Perform PMs and repairs on compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, vessels, valves, and other machinery included in the ammonia refrigeration equipment.
- Work directly with all refrigeration contractors, electricians, and pipefitters when they are working on the ammonia refrigeration system to ensure that they are following all of the company safety policies, and meeting work standards.
- Performs duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager and/or Maintenance Supervisor
- Ensures continuous operation of all the facility utility systems and peripheral equipment to support the requirements of the production schedule and facility conditions. This requires proper coordination of all operations and maintenance utilities equipment.
- Coordinates both internal and external resources for maintenance of the facility.
- Assists in the development of all environmental programs required from local, state, and federal agencies.
- Assists in the recordkeeping and training requirements for all components of the Process Safety Management/Risk (PSM/RMP management plans to achieve compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Provides technical analysis and services to provide real-time data on the status of refrigeration and operational equipment.
- Assures the ammonia compressors are operating safely and efficiently to reduce energy consumption.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment to maintain in good working condition.
- Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, and plumbing.
- Utilizes drawings, technical records, and vendor diagrams to complete Preventative Maintenance documents (PM’s) related to machine overhauls and repairs.
- Handles maintenance emergencies as required.
- Completes duties in accordance with quality assurance, Good Manufacturing Practices, safety and other company programs and procedures, and in accordance with government codes and regulations.
- Maintains clean, organized, and safe work area, including wiping and washing equipment and tools; sweeping and mopping floors; trash removal.
- Works to maintain and improve on the quality, legality and safety of each product and the processes used in their manufacture. Responsible for keeping assigned work area clean and tidy at all times and reporting any potential contamination and suspicious activity to a supervisor immediately.

- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Ammonia refrigeration certification preferred
- Certificate in HVAC preferred
- PSM training preferred.
- Knowledge of equipment set-up, functions, operating procedures, and preventative maintenance techniques.
- 3 years of experience working with Ammonia refrigeration
- Experience working in a maintenance department, preferably in an automated food processing plant.
Qualifications/Skills/Abilities
- Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical/refrigeration/utilities field in an industrial or manufacturing setting is preferred.
- Working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration system is a must.
- Basic computer skills including Google Suite and L2L.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to provide own hand tools
- Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
- Ability to adjust quickly to changing demands.
- Must be able to work with limited supervision.
- Must be able to cover other days and weekends as needed.
- Must be able to climb ladders and do work on aerial work platforms as needed.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to work in all types of conditions including cold work in the winter time and hot work in the summer time.
- Must be able to read and interpret P& ID drawings.
- Candidates must successfully pass post-offer/pre-employment drug test, background screen and physical.
Work Environment
This job operates in a manufacturing environment and occasionally in an office setting. Extended periods of standing while walking the production floor and also occasional period of sitting using a computer or other devices are common.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear as defined below:
- Ability to communicate orally with vendors, management, and coworkers is crucial. Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential. Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.
- The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the office and plant occasionally (accessing files/storage, office equipment, computers and other office productivity devices, etc.), is required.
- Using a computer while sitting for extended periods is common. Must also be able to position self to use and maintain equipment, including under tables and desks.
- No heavy lifting is expected, though occasional exertion of about 15 lbs. of force (e.g., binders, laptops) may be required. Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices, calculators, copiers, scanners).
Supervisor Responsibility
- Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department
- Oversees the daily workflow of the department
- Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
- Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
