About the Department

The City of Pomona is seeking a dedicated and dynamic leader to join our Community Services team as a Community Services Specialist III – Youth Sports. In this advanced role, you’ll take the lead in shaping and expanding sports programs that help Pomona’s youth grow, play, and thrive. You’ll mentor staff, oversee operations across multiple sites, and ensure our youth sports leagues, camps, and events are delivered with excellence, teamwork, and enthusiasm.

Reporting to a Recreation Coordinator and under the guidance of a Recreation Supervisor, the CSS III – Youth Sports will be pivotal in ensuring that programs meet City goals, community needs, and safety standards, while serving as a mentor and role model for staff, volunteers, and youth employees.

Assignment and Work Schedule Overview

This part-time position offers approximately 15–20 hours per week, with shifts typically scheduled Monday through Friday during the general hours of 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., though specific shift times may vary. Depending on program needs, occasional morning and weekend shifts may also be required. It’s a great opportunity to grow professionally while maintaining work-life balance. Please note this is an at-will, part-time position with no benefits, and is limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.

  • 4% pay increase effective 10/1/2025
  • 5% pay increase effective 10/1/2026

Position Duties

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

  • Two (2) years of paid experience in a recreational or organized sports field.
  • High school graduate or GED equivalency required.
  • College-level coursework in the fields of kinesiology, Physical Education, Sports Medicine, Exercise Science and Nutrition is highly desirable.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" driver's license and have a good driving record.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee youth sports programs across multiple sites, including practices, leagues, tournaments, camps, and recreational events.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Community Services Specialist I & II staff, volunteers, and youth employees; provide coaching, feedback, and support for professional growth.
  • Ensure programs align with City goals, grant/contract requirements, and community needs, meeting established outcomes and deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain program schedules, calendars of activities, and operational procedures; oversee site setup/tear down of sports equipment, equipment inventory, and site upkeep.
  • Organize, officiate, and instruct participants in various sports as needed, while ensuring consistent delivery of rules, fundamentals, safety, and sportsmanship across all sites.
  • Emphasize skill development, fair play, inclusion, and fun while ensuring a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for all participants.
  • Lead and expand outreach and recruitment efforts to promote youth enrollment, increase participation, and strengthen community engagement.
  • Conduct program visits, maintain observation logs, and monitor program quality; prepare reports and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Collaborate on the development of new sports programs and best practices across multiple sites; contribute to long-term program planning and innovation.
  • Train and guide staff in program delivery, safety protocols, and customer service standards; assist in the creation and facilitation of staff trainings.
  • Monitor staff schedules, attendance, timecards, and performance to ensure operational efficiency and accountability.
  • Perform administrative duties including attendance tracking, enrollment records, monthly program summaries, and compliance reports.
  • Accurately document and report all incidents/accidents; ensure emergency and safety procedures are consistently followed at all times.
  • Respond effectively in both routine and emergency situations, including administering basic first aid when necessary.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with youth, parents/guardians, City officials, coworkers, community members, and collaborative partners.
  • Serve as a positive role model and uphold the City’s mission, values, and professional image at all times.
  • Support and participate in Department and Citywide events as assigned.
  • Ensure consistent supervision, safety, and guidance for all program participants.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
