We are looking for an experienced carpenter to join our Facilities Team at Chewonki! In this hands-on role, you’ll apply your skills to repair, maintain, and build structures and furnishings across our campus. Location: Wiscasset, Maine (On Campus, in-person)
Reports to: Facilities Director
Schedule: Full Time, Year- round
Monday - Friday; Some weekends required, including rotating on-call facilities duties.

What You’ll Do:
Repair and restore carpentry features across campus buildings and facilities.
Build new projects—from windows and doors to decks, stairs, siding, roofs, signs, benches, and custom furniture.
Take on finishing work including painting, patching, and surface prep.
Keep work areas safe and organized while handling general maintenance tasks.
Support seasonal operations with snow plowing, shoveling, and sanding.
Lead hands-on work programs with staff, students, and volunteers.
Ensure quality and safety by following building codes and organizational standards.
Collaborate across departments and assist with off-campus facilities when needed.
Rotate on-call duties as part of the facilities team.
Be part of campus life—share meals, contribute to community culture, and uphold safety protocols.
What We’re Looking For:
We’re searching for a seasoned carpenter who is just as comfortable with a table saw as they are planning a project from start to finish. The right candidate will bring:
Proven experience in carpentry (minimum 2 years), with the ability to handle a wide range of construction and repair projects.
Strong technical skills using hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery.
Solid knowledge of carpentry methods, building materials, safety practices, and building codes.
Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, durable work.
Leadership ability to guide staff, students, and volunteers in group projects.
Problem-solving skills and flexibility to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to collaborate across departments and contribute to a supportive community.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (trade school training a bonus).
Must be at least 18 years old.
Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery.
Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background/MVR checks.
Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and climb for extended periods.
Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to work in an active, outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions.
Manual dexterity to operate tools and equipment safely.
Exposure to noise, dust, and use of protective equipment (PPE) is required.
