GRANT SUMMARY
The goal of the Athabascan Suicide Response Project is to reduce confrontations with law enforcement and connect people in crisis to the right help, right away. This project is framed around the concepts of community, family, and culture and integrates elements of each into its suicide response following referral. The overarching goal is to develop the infrastructure to support the 988 Initiative to increase the capacity of the behavioral health community to implement, sustain, and improve effective culturally responsive suicide 988 crisis calls and response.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position leads the Community Response Team and provides comprehensive treatment, consumer advocacy/support and family therapy in a culturally resonant manner. The incumbent will also provide interventions, assessments, and stabilization services for consumers in crisis.
JOB DUTIES
- Contacts Community Response Team members immediately upon referral from 988 call.
- Develops Safety Plan during first contact.
- Meets with consumer telephonically weekly for one month to support and continue assessing ongoing risk.
- Leads the suicide crisis response as a part of the Community Response Team.
- Identifies, with consumer, a family member to provide three months of support after post treatment discharge.
- Meets in a community versus office setting.
- Provides culturally specific suicide prevention materials.
- Guides weekly “Good Choices”, an evidence-based practice that has been tested for cultural relevance for family training.
- Trains 988 staff in culturally specific communication techniques.
- Facilitates weekly Talking Circles.
- Participates in the culturally specific marketing campaign to inform the community of the change from 911 to 988 and explain the benefits of culturally specific crisis response.
- Provides substance use disorder and mental health counseling.
- Implements and delivers Crisis Oriented Recovery Service using evidence-based practices.
- Develops comprehensive mental health and case management plans in an accurate and timely manner.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement and data-driven decision-making processes to assess program efficacy and drive quality improvement.
- Ensures adherence to data collection requirements in accordance with established standards and enters accurate and timely data into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Attends staff meetings and in-service training and presents cases for routine/problematic staffing as needed, including participation in interdisciplinary treatment teams.
- Provides culturally relevant and trauma informed service.
- Attends mandatory position training that provides training in risk factors.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
- Ability to perform shift work for evenings and weekends.
- Ability to report to work in a timely manner.
- Knowledge of substance abuse and mental health; and appropriate skills in working with consumers with Mental Health/Substance Use disorders.
- Skill in working successfully with the Alaska Native/American Indian population and experience providing culturally specific programming; understanding of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles.
- Skill in operating/using computers and using Windows, Word, and Excel with ability to accurately input information into reporting formats.
- Above average communication and people skills with the ability to accurately follow written and verbal instructions.
- Knowledge on how to best assist possible escalated individuals during data collection process.
- Ability to protect confidentiality is essential; HIPAA & 42 CFR compliant.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret/understand billing procedures.
- Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting their deadlines.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, agencies, and consumers.
- Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)- Master’s degree in social work, counseling, behavioral health, or related field.
- Experience documenting in an electronic health record.
- One (1) years’ experience with billing systems.
- Two (2) years’ experience working in the mental health field.
- Two (2) years’ experience working with AN/AI population and experience providing culturally specific services.
