Job Description

50% - Contract Review
Intern’s primary responsibility is to review & revise a multitude of agreements that facilitate KU research, including confidential disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, and sponsored research agreements.

35% - Administrative Assistance:
Responsibilities include processing routine documents, emails, electronic filing, retrieving records from databases, entering database system actions, etc.

10% - Research Assignments
Additional responsibilities include researching laws, regulations, and policies affecting academic research, and providing summary findings to the Contract Negotiations team.

5% - Miscellaneous:
Interns may occasionally be tasked with reviewing and updating contract templates and questionnaires, and other tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule

Flexible between 8 to 5 M-F. Up 20 hours weekly while classes are in session and 40 hours weekly while classes are not in session.

Required Qualifications

  1. 2L or 3L law school student, in top half of class.
  2. Prior work experience requiring strong attention to detail and organizational skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Prior experience working independently and seeking out new work when existing assignments are completed, as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Prior work experience managing multiple agreements and assignments, as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Prior work experience requiring confidentiality and/or handling of sensitive information, as evidenced by application materials.

Position Overview

The Contract Negotiations division of the KU Office of Research is seeking an intern beginning with the Fall 2025 semester. Students with experience or interest in transactional work, intellectual property, administrative law, or education law would be a good fit.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
