About the Position

The Commercial Manager is a leadership role responsible for formulating and executing a profitable business strategy for the milling assets in the region.  The position works closely with operations, quality, and finance teams to set and meet business and operational metrics.  Candidate will successfully manage local grain procurement and risk management, with support from the wheat trade team.  The role will focus on wheat and flour blending and related activities to minimize cost, maximize output and grow profits.
This position will be located in Calgary, AB. This position will be responsible for optimizing and executing the bulk truck, rail, container and packaged product execution and all related commercial activities.  Candidate will develop and support employees to achieve personal, regional, and corporate goals.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for Profit and Loss of the Milling business
  • Local customer service and logistics team reports directly to this position.
  • Maximize profits through management of grain procurement and inventories, product sales, execution and customer service
  • Identify and manage risk related to grain quality, finished product and co-products
  • Manage and trade truck freight and basis positions, as well as arbitrage positions with barges, rail and truck where applicable

  • Coordinate with Centralized Wheat Procurement and Grist Management taskforce for effective management of intermarket spreads and positions.
  • Understand and facilitate import and export of net raw materials and finished products through effective collaboration with corporate trade compliance and keen understanding of trade compliance rules.
  • Monthly P&L reporting, forecasting and annual planning
  • Analyze and distribute financial performance to local and regional leadership
  • Responsible for hiring, training and development of direct reports
  • Define and execute the milling commercial strategy
  • Operate with an owner’s mindset and have a strategic thought process
  • Manage the competitive landscape
  • Actively partner with Sales on Mill strategy – product mix, customer base, etc
  • Be proactive with local customers needs
  • Serve as the voice of the milling business
  • Collaborate with AS&O regional and local colleagues to drive efficiencies of trade execution and positions
  • Drive growth and capex projects through effective project management and coordination with Corporate COE’s
  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers and vendors
  • Serve as the Mill to Bakery contact
  • Manage Mill and Execution scheduling utilizing S&OP tools and metrics
  • Be a Safety Champion
  • All other duties as required
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Highly motivated & competitive
  • Ability to multitask and communicate with colleagues at all levels
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Working computer knowledge - Microsoft Word and Excel is required
Education or Work Experience
  • 5 Years prior experience in milling management or other commercial experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business / Economics / Agriculture related field
