Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai is at the forefront of developing next-generation imaging and radiation methods. Our research advances the field of radiation therapy through more precise and effective treatments and techniques.

The Cedars-Sinai Cancer Center Toro Health Pathways (THP) Internship provides an immersive research experience in cutting-edge cancer research for students who might otherwise face barriers to such opportunities. This program allows recent graduates from CSUDH with health-related degrees to put their education into practice while learning directly from leading researchers.

Interns will join a research team for nine months (24 hours per week) to contribute to clinical cancer outcomes research in the emerging field of cardio-oncology, which focuses on the intersection of oncology and cardiology and the effects of cancer therapies on cardiovascular health.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Review and research project background with mentor.

  • Participate in all phases of research: planning, preparation, application, evaluation, and analysis.

  • Collect, interpret, and analyze clinical data.

  • Draw conclusions and prepare reports based on research findings.

  • Present project updates and final results to peers and colleagues.


Internship Goals & Objectives

  • Develop understanding of research design, data collection, and analysis.

  • Gain introductory knowledge of cancer staging, treatment types, and cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Perform chart reviews of electronic medical records and radiotherapy planning systems.

  • Conduct literature reviews to support research scope and background.

  • Build scientific communication skills through presentations and posters.


Additional Information

  • Internship involves participation in IRB-approved studies (e.g., STUDY00003891).

  • Interns will not handle biological specimens or samples.

  • Interns will work with protected health information (PHI) and receive training on compliance and confidentiality.

  • Systems training includes RedCap (data input), CS-Link (data collection), and radiation treatment software Mosaiq and Eclipse.


Program Timeline (August 25, 2025 – May 20, 2026)

Month 1: Introduction & Orientation

  • Training in EMR navigation, PHI compliance, and radiation treatment planning systems.

Months 2–3: Foundation Building

  • Begin systematic data collection with growing independence.

  • Extract cardiovascular and cancer treatment details.

Months 4–6: Skill Development & Analysis

  • Analyze relationships between treatment and cardiovascular outcomes.

  • Participate in weekly research team meetings and prepare early results.

Months 7–8: Independent Research

  • Conduct independent data analysis and develop research poster materials.

Month 9: Completion & Presentation

  • Finalize report and presentation for the THP Culminating Event.

Ongoing Throughout Internship

  • Weekly check-ins with supervisor and research team meetings.

  • Participation in academic events and networking forums.

  • Continuous training in healthcare data management.


Required:

  • 18 years or older

  • HS diploma or GED

  • Must reside in Greater Los Angeles during internship

  • Must receive academic credit if participating as an intern

Preferred:

  • Recent graduate from a CSU campus (especially CSUDH, CSUSB, CSULB, CSULA, CSUF, CSUCI, CSUN, or Cal Poly Pomona)
