We are currently seeking the following position at our Salton Division.
Lead Heavy Equipment Operator (Landfill)
The Lead Heavy Equipment Operator at the Landfill assists the Site Manager, as needed, in the daily management of the field crew direction and tasking, operates a variety of heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner, while utilizing best and accepted operating methods to process incoming non-hazardous municipal solid waste.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assist Site Manager with daily operational needs and is responsible for daily direction of field crew.
- Provide supervisory control of site during the Site Manager’s absence.
- Operate heavy equipment and water truck, as needed, for placement, covering, and compaction of trash, as well as construction and maintenance of roads on landfill site.
- Assists Site Manager with forward planning for varying seasonal operating needs.
- Assists with the daily inspection and follow through on proper maintenance and repair of equipment and paperwork.
- Assists with overall maintenance of site including litter control and buildings. Maintains deck level, slope level and tipping area.
- Helps enforce operations and safety policies and procedures.
- Assists with training and evaluation of site personnel.
- Assists with preparation of weekly schedules.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Must have a valid Class “B” California Commercial Driver’s License, required.
- Tanker endorsements and no air brake or automatic transmission restrictions, preferred.
- Must be able to read and understand safety rules, operating manuals and procedures manuals,
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Requires a minimum of two years’ experience operating heavy equipment on solid waste landfills and posse demonstrable leadership and interpersonal communication skills.Must be an effective communicator and recognize individual staff needs for understanding directions which may be either verbal and/or visual communications.
- Must have:
- Effective radio communication skills to provide regular and clear direction of crew while monitoring changing operational needs and conditions throughout each day.
- Ability to monitor surrounding work area, traffic, public and crew for safety and potential hazards, while operating equipment at the disposal area, with an acute attention to detail such as safe spotter procedures, vehicle spacing and backing practices.
- Must be able to recognize changing operational needs for various crew attentions throughout the operating day and direct crew members to complete tasks as needed while he/she is operating, including changes in wind direction, litter fence placement, application of dust control water, pick litter, relocation of litter fencing, hauling cover soil, etc., and general crew efficiency.
All candidates, which include internal employees or external applicants, must successfully complete an on-site operating skills test on all landfill site equipment and must demonstrate proficiency on all equipment types while exhibiting safe tipping table management, waste fill construction, waste slope shaping and grading, efficient waste compaction and cover soil application on a variety of slope configurations.
HAZWOPER training is not required, but is a plus.
PHYSICAL:
- This position requires that the individual walk on level and slippery surfaces, sit, stand, crouch, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, climb and lift objects up to 50 pounds.
- Requires grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties.
- Requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment.
- Requires independent body mobility to stand and climb into different pieces of heavy equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to work effectively outdoors and under extreme seasonal weather conditions, including heat, rain and wind.
- Will be working in and around non-hazardous solid waste, food waste compost, WWTP biosolids and may be exposed to airborne dust, sharp objects and noisy equipment.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
- Must have steel-toe work boots with puncture-proof soles and wear company-provided PPE, including a hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses/goggles, earplugs, dust mask, and gloves.
