About the Department

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Registered Nurse to join our team as a 12-Month School Health Nurse. This position is essential for providing comprehensive health services and promoting the health and well-being of our students within the school environment. As a key member of our school health team, you will play a vital role in delivering care, managing health conditions, and fostering a safe and healthy atmosphere for students. Your expertise will contribute to enhancing student outcomes and supporting the overall health initiatives of our schools.

Schedule: Monday-Friday (7:30am-3:30pm or 8:00am-4:00pm), occasional evening/weekend community events required.

This is a school-based position, the nurse travels directly from home to the assigned school on a daily basis. A driver’s license is required in order to travel to the other assigned schools and to make home visits, if necessary. A county vehicle may be available for such visits.

Position Duties

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Nursing Knowledge and Application: Considerable knowledge of and skill in nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques specific to public health and related programs, ensuring effective service delivery to students. 
  • Public Health Principles: Strong understanding of public health principles and practices, enabling the nurse to implement health initiatives and interventions effectively. 
  • Resource Coordination: Ability to identify, utilize, and coordinate available health resources and community organizations as needed to support student health initiatives. 
  • Social and Economic Awareness: Working knowledge of current social and economic issues affecting public health, allowing for informed responses to student and community health concerns. 
  • Leadership and Supervision: Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of other health staff, promoting a collaborative and efficient work environment. 
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills to deal tactfully with students, parents, and staff, exercising good judgment in assessing situations and making decisions. 
  • Client Cooperation and Communication: Ability to secure cooperation from clients, elicit pertinent information, and maintain effective working relationships for comprehensive health management. 
  • Accurate Record Keeping: Proficient in recording services rendered accurately, interpreting, and explaining medical records, reports, and instructions to ensure clear communication of health information. 
  • Team Collaboration: Strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, fostering a team-oriented environment focused on student health and well-being.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area; or

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience.

Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Drivers License is required.

Pediatrics and/or school health experience, preferred. Bilingual Spanish/English, preferred. 

Other Qualifications

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver nursing care in accordance with public health principles and practices. 
  • Conduct health assessments and implement health initiatives tailored to student needs. 
  • Coordinate available health resources and collaborate with community organizations to enhance student health initiatives. 
  • Respond effectively to social and economic factors that may impact student health. 
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of health staff, fostering a collaborative environment. 
  • Exercise excellent interpersonal skills to engage with students, parents, and staff, ensuring effective communication and support. 
  • Maintain accurate records of health services provided and interpret medical information as needed. 
  • Collaborate with other school staff to establish a supportive and health-focused environment. 
  • Provide coverage for summer school programs sponsored by the local school district, ensuring continuity of care and health services.
