GENERAL STATEMENT
Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, the graduate assistant will assist with the development and operations of the Personal Training program for the Fitness Department. The graduate assistant may also aid in overall fitness operations and programing including, but not limited to group fitness, , instructional fitness, special events and weight room operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist in the management and development of the personal training program, including scheduling, certification tracking, and workshop coordination.
- Provide personal training services and teach group fitness and wellness classes as assigned.
- Develop and implement comprehensive fitness training programs; assist in organizing fitness events, seminars, and workshops.
- Maintain participation records and create tools to assess program effectiveness.
- Aid in coordination of required training courses, including CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
- Help maintain employee records, conduct monthly staff meetings, and hold regular office hours.
- Assists in developing, updating, and maintaining standard operating procedures, training manuals, safety protocols, and program-related forms. Supports compliance efforts to ensure all documentation aligns with university policies, HIPAA regulations, and applicable industry standards. Maintains strict confidentiality of all records and information.
- Collaborate with student leads and graduate assistants to plan and implement staff training and large-scale programs.
- Support the ongoing evaluation of all fitness programs and contribute to quarterly and annual reporting.
- Assist with the management, maintenance, and procurement of fitness equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards.
- Support the development of promotional materials and represent the fitness program at campus events.
- Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of approximately 30–40 fitness employees.
- Assist as needed with scheduling for student and part-time staff for group exercise classes, instructional fitness sessions, and special events; manage shift trades as needed.
- Serve on ASI, University, and NIRSA committees as assigned or approved.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience
B.A or B.S. degree in Health Promotions, Exercise Science, Sports Management, Recreation or related field. Concurrent enrollment in six or more graduate units at CSULB. Minimum of 1-year progressive experience in a university or related fitness setting.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Currently holds minimum certification in one or more of the following entities: ACSM, NSCA, ACE, AFAA, NASM or reasonable substitute.
Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid/CPR /AED Certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
California Driver's License necessary as incumbent will drive university vehicles as needed including ASI carts, van and/or truck.

Successful candidate will possess strong student development knowledge and the ability to connect well with students. Must be willing to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse group of student staff and volunteers. Willingness to research information and professional organizations. Exceptional customer skills are a must. Must possess enhanced leadership skills and be able to work in a diverse environment.
