The Oncology RN Assistant Manager will partner with an assigned Nurse Manager to provide oversight for patient care and nursing services on their assigned unit and shift. This includes promoting quality, evidence-based care, and patient satisfaction in a fiscally responsive manner. Assistant Nurse Managers will work 2 x 12-hour shifts as Charge RN, and 2 x 8-hour shifts in an administration role at the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty & Research Hospital.
Responsibilities
- Directly supervises and evaluates the provision of patient care by other personnel assigned to the unit.
- Makes daily patient rounds and completes random chart audits.
- Manages staff to meet established productivity targets as appropriate.
- Review staffing/nursing assignments and revise them as necessary to meet the specific needs of the patients on a shift-by-shift basis.
- Coordinates staffing with Central Staffing Office/House Supervisor.
- Makes ongoing changes to staffing as determined by fluctuations in census and patient acuity to ensure safe delivery of care.
- Promotes and enthusiastically supports professional growth of staff by providing equal opportunities for participation in unit-based activities, patient care/unit decisions, hospital committees, and/or continuing education.
- Provides timely, confidential coaching and/or counseling of nursing personnel as appropriate and follows up with accurate reports to Unit Manager.
- Assures first-person reporting of events through the Event Reporting System.
- Ensures all staff are competent in entering event reports and serves as a resource when necessary. Investigates the facts of event reports.
- Facilitates timely receipt of these reports for follow-up by the Unit Manager and notifies the Nurse Manager/Risk Manager immediately of high-risk situations.
- Works with Unit Manager, Care Management/Coordination, Physicians, Nurse Navigators, and other disciplines to streamline discharge of patients and achieve goals for discharge efficiency.
- Coordinates self-scheduling to maintain appropriate coverage for unit needs.
- Maintains daily attendance records, monitoring for trends that require intervention i.e., late clock-ins, incremental overtime, missed punches, etc.
- Assumes delegated responsibility for inventory control of equipment and supplies to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Facilitates timely return of rented or borrowed specialty equipment.
- Solicits staff input regarding equipment and supply needs for the unit.
- Assists leadership in conducting accreditation readiness audits to assess compliance with standards.
- Actively participates on hospital work groups.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required
Certification/Licensure:
- Current Texas Board of Nursing (or Compact State) RN license; Or a Temporary Texas RN License (Permanent TX license within 90 days upon hire).
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, within 7 days of hire.

- Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
