Description:
Primary responsibilities for the Mental Health Support Specialist is to provide individualized support to students and families in the areas of behavioral and mental health and character development in relationship to education. The Mental Health Support Specialist will work with school staff and community partners to organize and systematically deliver appropriate mental health consultations, services, and referrals. The Mental Health Support Specialist will provide crisis interventions that results in increased student attendance, improved behavior and reduced discipline referrals in assigned schools. The Mental Health Support Specialist will additionally provide individual and group counseling sessions during in school and after school hours around coping, anger management, substance abuse issues, grief and loss, and trauma. The Mental Health Support Specialist will coordinate with local agencies in utilizing self-improvement methods and practices, and in such areas, including child abuse and neglect, alcohol and drug abuse, gang activities, domestic violence, defiant behavior, family divorce and separation, adoption, suicidal issues and other related family crisis issues.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Studies, Psychology or equivalent, required
Licensed Independent Social Worker or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor required
Minimum of five years successful experience
Exceptional knowledge in the use of assessment and assessment data to inform practice and prescribe service plans for individual students
Exceptional knowledge in the use of technology
Trained in nonviolent crisis intervention preferred
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Offer individualized assistance and support with minimum supervision, assessing students’ needs and identifying and reducing barriers through case management principles
Provide assessment, evaluation, service planning and timely indication on subsequent documentation of clients and/or situations
Coordinate, participate and provide assistance within the continued development of crisis intervention and outreach services as identified by the individual need of students and/or situations, upon assessment
Intra-organization program collaboration to develop content, identify needs and facilitate group workshops on topics such as emotional development, family relations, stress management and depression and other special topics related to marriage, families and work/life balance
Assist staff by researching and/or developing appropriate screening tools
Participate in any/all required trainings related to programs, services and/or subject matter
Participate in local Mental Health associations and groups to inform program development and tailor services
Ensure all Mental Health resources are updated and accessible to program staff
Foster relationships with service providers in the community and maintain a centralized resource list in order to provide information and referrals to staff and clients
Facilitate external referrals to access services by making initial contact on behalf of staff or clients and ensuring follow-up to program information and/or access to resources, as needed
Meet regularly with school-based teams to discuss student strengths, needs, and programmatic development and provide recommendations to programs for best practices
Maintain a paper file and electronic records, documenting all interactions and referrals and entering data according to program guidelines
Act as a subject matter expert and advisory resource to program staff
Conduct conflict resolution and peer mediation sessions.
Participate in building level MTSS team and/or grade level meetings, as appropriate.
Consult with School Social Worker, School Counselor, Content Specialist and Teachers.
Attend professional development opportunities to maintain high level of skill and knowledge of current job related research and practices
Serve as a consultant to administrators, teachers, and parents.
Organize and schedule time commitments to meet demands of the job.
Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures; report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve District, building, departmental and/or grade level goals.
Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
Track and submit claims for Medicaid billing.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as members of the Bedford City Schools.
Maintains respect at all times for confidential information.
Makes contact with the public with tact & diplomacy.
Interacts in a positive manner with staff, students, parents.
Serves as a liaison among the community. School district, volunteers, parent groups, businesses, Board of Education and other educational entities.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Occasionally lift, carry, push and pull various items up to a maximum of 50 pounds, e.g., classroom materials and supplies
Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, crouch, kneel and stoop
Occasional requirement to balance, climb and use color vision
Occasional requirement to operate school district vehicle
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District
