We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious 3rd Shift Refrigeration Technician to oversee the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of our industrial ammonia refrigeration system in a protein manufacturing facility. This role is critical to ensuring proper cooling and freezing processes that support food safety, product quality, and facility operations. The technician will work independently during overnight hours and must be prepared to respond to any equipment or system issues promptly and effectively.


Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain ammonia refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, pumps, evaporators, spiral chillers, spiral freezers, and associated controls.
  • Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance on refrigeration, chiller, and freezer equipment to maximize uptime and efficiency.
  • Monitor leak detection systems and respond immediately to alarms or potential hazards.
  • Ensure proper documentation for EPA compliance, refrigeration logs, and PSM (Process Safety Management) program requirements.
  • Conduct temperature checks and maintain control systems to support food safety standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Adjust and fine-tune equipment and controls to optimize energy usage and performance.
  • Provide refrigeration coverage and emergency response during the shift, including during unplanned downtime or urgent repair needs.
  • Order repair parts, refrigerant, and maintain appropriate inventory levels for system reliability.
  • Support and communicate regularly with the Maintenance Supervisor and team regarding system status, repairs, and safety issues.
  • Oversee and assist outside contractors performing service, repairs, or installations within the refrigeration and mechanical systems.
  • Maintain daily housekeeping and cleanliness of the engine/refrigeration rooms to ensure safety and hygiene.
  • Follow all GMPs, safety protocols, and lockout/tagout procedures during equipment service and maintenance.
  • Support the water treatment program and follow up on condenser cleaning and water quality service contracts.

Requirements

  • One-year certificate from a college or technical school in industrial refrigeration, HVAC, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in industrial refrigeration, preferably in a food or protein processing environment.
  • Strong understanding of ammonia-based refrigeration systems, including electrical and mechanical components.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex refrigeration equipment independently.
  • Physical stamina to lift heavy equipment and work in cold or wet environments as needed.
  • Working knowledge of PSM regulations, EPA reporting, and food safety requirements (preferred).
  • Ability to work independently during 3rd shift hours and respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail in documentation and safety compliance.
