POSITION AVAILABLE Adult Academic Program teacher for Multi-Level English Language Class
New Hopw Learning Center
Monday through Thursday 11:45 - 2:15 pm, (10 hours instruction and 115 minutes prep per week)
Casual rate based on the teacher bargaining agreement
Reports to the Adult Academic Program Director
38 weeks
SUMMARY
Provide quality instruction aligned to the state and national standards. Use a variety of assessment strategies - diagnostic, formative and summative, to inform instructional decisions and increase student self-management of learning. Rigorous inquiry-based learning tasks engage students in deep content of the discipline as well as the habits of scholarship. May be required to work as a member of the campus STEM team to ensure quality integrated instruction across disciplines.
RESPONSIBILITIES - Chooses and/or designs instructional activities relevant to adult students’ level
- Provides small group and virtual instruction
- Builds rapport between staff and students
- Maintains student and program records as directed by Program Director
- Administers progress testing according to MDE schedule requirements
- Plans and coordinates the work of paraprofessionals and/or volunteers to assist with
- instruction; provides appropriate feedback.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor degree and current Minnesota teacher license in any field with certification in one of the following preferred: ABE, ESL, foreign language or Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English as a Second Language, applied linguistics, or bilingual education.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Cooperation as a member of a professional teaching team
- Openness to new educational practices
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience teaching adults whose native language is not English
- Understanding of and respect for cultural issues facing immigrants and refugees
- Familiarity with Standards in ABE and how to teach to the standards
- Incorporation of educational technology into instruction
- Current with trends in the field of English Language Learning and Adult Basic Education
- Flexibility in level being taught; the level may change to reflect program and student needs.
