Principal Software Engineer (m/f/d) – Surgical Robotics – Kinematics at Medtronic

A Day in the Life

In this role, you will join a world class team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers responsible for further development and enhancement of Medtronic’s globally launched Robotic Assisted Surgery platform Hugo: https://www.medtronic.com/covidien/en-us/robotic-assisted-surgery/hugo-ras-system.html

The Kinematics software team is developing algorithms controlling Hugo’s motion. We translate the desired instrument trajectory, as commanded by the surgeons handheld input device, into precise joint movements. Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

• Design and develop Kinematics algorithms in Simulink that enables surgeons and operating-room staff to control “Hugo”, a Robotic Assisted Surgery System
• Integrate and test new controller designs on hardware and with the rest of the robotic platform
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of verification methods
• Partner with the greater software organization, systems engineering, and validation groups
• Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within the team.
• Define and review software requirements and exercise latitude in determining deliverables
• Conduct software and product hardware-in-loop testing and create model and prototypes
• Act as an independent reviewer of Simulink models to ensure that all software meets quality standards
• Prepare and participate in design reviews
• Document or participate in the documentation of the software including architecture and design detail, unit testing, anomaly tracking and reports
• Hybrid work from our office in Munich, with up to 5% of international travel

Required Knowledge and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree with 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 5 years of relevant experience.
• Solid foundation of mathematics for controlling robotic systems, including multi-body kinematics, feedback controllers, and signal processing
• Expertise in using Simulink to design and develop complex software products, with familiarity in Simulink Coder and a deep understanding of code generation.
• Advanced knowledge of software development tools, including build automation (cmake preferred), code coverage, unit testing, static analysis, debugging, and source control (git preferred).
• Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail, with ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to build consensus and establish common goals.
• Fluency in English

Proficiency in developing software in a Linux environment, with a strong understanding of operating systems and compilation processes is a plus. A strong understanding of best practices for developing software in Simulink, with the ability to implement and advocate for these practices across the team is another advantage, as is experience with real-time operating systems (QNX preferred).

Experience with diverse, cross-functional teams; Geodiversity spanning an international environment is another bonus.
