About the Department
An employee in this class performs mechanical work that involves installation, modification and repairs of specialized equipment. Work also includes troubleshooting issues, reading technical diagrams, and document work performed for accurate records keeping. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Police Services Support Sergeant or designee and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
Position Duties
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Installation and removal of equipment in new/retired patrol vehicles
- Reuse and repurposing of existing equipment
- Maintaining high and consistent installation standards
- Performing diagnostics and troubleshooting on in-vehicle systems
- Supporting special-purpose vehicles and emergency fleet needs
- Collaborating with the Fleet and IT department to ensure seamless technology integration
- Maintain electronic records and data
- Upfits various types of specialized equipment such as GPS, police equipment, lighting, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, wiring and diagnostic procedures
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams and schematics
- Strong attention to detail, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace and care for all tools and equipment
- Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work
- Stay updated on current upfitting technology and best practices
- Perform maintenance and repair on upfitted equipment
- Ability to operate vehicles safely
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately
