Individual Placement-Alaska- Visitor Services at Student Conservation Association (SCA)

Position Summary 

The primary role of this position will be to support visitor services and community engagement for the Kodiak Refuge at the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. This position will work closely as part of a dynamic team while leading tours for visitors of the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center,. supporting operations and information desk staffing.. This position will create and support programs, special events, and activities for all ages at the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Core duties include, but not limited to:

· Organizing supplies and logistics for programs and special events.

· Preparing for programs, activities, and providing interpretive programs and leadership while working at the visitor center.

· Coordinating with staff and volunteers while working at the visitor center.

· Communicating by email, phone, mail or in person for all facets of work with colleagues, visitors, and community partners.

Marginal Duties 

This position will also support a number of other re-occurring environmental education programs at the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center, such as the Families Understanding Nature program and special events such as World Migratory Bird Day, as well as outreach at the Refuge.

Required Qualifications 

Kodiak Refuge Visitor Services Program employees, volunteers, and placements will participate in a minimum of one week of training prior to leading a program or special event at the visitor center with team members. Ability to pass a background check for working unsupervised with youth.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience working with children ages 3-12.

Experience or coursework in customer service, education or interpretation.

Comfortable being outside in inclement, wet weather.

Knowledge of Alutiiq or Alaska Native history and culture.

Experience with outreach events, youth programs, , and/or community service.

Strong communication.

Hours 

40 per week

Living Accommodations 

Kodiak Refuge housing will be provided. Housing will be shared, including shared common areas like bathroom and kitchen. The City of Kodiak (Kodiak, AK) is on Kodiak Island, with a population of around 14,000 residents. Kodiak Island is only accessible by commercial flight or the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System.

Compensation  

$1,300 - one-time roundtrip travel allowance

$600/week - living allowance

$1,000 - duty-related reimbursements (used for work duty-related expenses - discuss with supervisor)

Housing provided in refuge shared housing

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
