About the Department
This is a supervisory position responsible for overseeing personnel engaged in security activities for all the City’s buildings and property and the special events held at these locations. The incumbent is responsible for the investigation of any accident, theft, or property damage reports involving City-owned property or equipment. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Security Operations and include direct supervision of both City and contracted security personnel. Related work is performed as required.
Position Duties
- Interprets security rules and procedures and ensures subordinates are in compliance with them;
- Responds to calls from subordinates asking for direction or assistance during emergency situations;
- Plans and schedules all City and contracted security personnel activities and rotating assignments;
- Reviews and approves time cards and time off requests for security personnel;
- Tracks attendance and discipline by entering data into a computer;
- Investigates all accidents, thefts or property damage on/to City-owned facilities or property (on 24-hour call basis), by interviewing personnel and examining and studying site conditions;
- Trains security guards in the operation of building automated control systems and the use of fire extinguishers and portable radios;
- Reviews daily all previous day's security reports to schedule and assigns needed repairs, makes personnel changes, starts investigations, etc.;
- Inspects daily all security vehicles and schedules maintenance, replacement and washing as needed;
- Monitors security personnel and security needs by daily visits and two-way radio contact;
- Develops and recommends changes to procedures and/or policies;
- Conducts safety briefing meetings at the beginning of every shift;
- Prepares reports on all emergency or unusual incidents after investigation, and monthly reports on all security activities;
- Assists Chief of Security Operations in interviewing new hires, disciplinary procedures and makes recommendations for terminations;
- Assists Chief in budget preparation, supplying reports and information as needed;
- Acts as Chief of Security Operations in his/her absence.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or G.E.D. PLUS:
- Associates Degree in Criminal Justice and one (1) year of experience as a security guard providing security services for buildings and grounds; OR
- Four (4) years experience as described in 1 above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid NYS Class D driver's license at time of appointment.
