About the Department
The City of Hanford is looking to fill one (1) Streets Maintenance Worker vacancy in the Public Works Department - Streets Division. This position is to perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of streets and to provide maintenance support in the field on special projects.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Streets Maintenance Worker I - This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
Streets Maintenance Worker II - This is the journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for providing technical and functional supervision of less experienced staff, and for performing the most complex work of the unit.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Streets Maintenance Worker I
Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker.
Streets Maintenance Worker II
Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor; may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker.
Position Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Respond to complaints and answer questions from the public.
Perform routine maintenance work in the care of tools and supplies.
Train less experienced staff in proper work methods and procedures.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.
Perform maintenance, repair, painting, construction and installation of streets, parking lots, curbs and sidewalks, and traffic control signs and striping.
Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, pothole repair and crack sealing of asphalt.
Install, maintain, and/or remove street signs; maintain records of sign reflectivity.
Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
Performs a variety of weed abatement duties to eliminate hazards to vehicles and pedestrians as necessary.
Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignment as instructed.
Installs street barricades and cones, and controls traffic around work sites to ensure safe conditions for the public and City workers.
Responds to operations, maintenance and repairs emergency situations as required.
Respond, in a timely manner, to after-hours calls for service.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Streets Maintenance Worker I
Knowledge of:
Common tools and materials used in the area of assignment.
Basic repair and maintenance procedures and practices.
Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Perform minor maintenance activities related to the area of assignment.
On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Intermittently, analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; and explain jobs to other employees.
Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on to heavy equipment to test or inspect systems; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less, and occasionally exert in excess of 100 pounds of force.
Safely and efficiently use tools related to area of assignment.
Learn to operate a variety of maintenance equipment, including hand and power tools.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Maintain daily records and logs.
Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.
Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy.
Establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and collaborative working relationships with others.
Experience and Education
Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Some construction or field maintenance work experience is desirable.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class C driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class B driver’s license with tanker and air brake endorsements within twelve months of appointment.
Ability to obtain work zone traffic control certification within the first 12 months of employment.
Streets Maintenance Worker II
In addition to the qualifications for the Streets Maintenance Worker I:
Knowledge of:
Practices and techniques of street maintenance, including crack sealing, asphalt maintenance and repair, and street painting (legends and striping).
Traffic control standards as prescribed by the California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Ability to:
Operate motorized equipment such as tractors and trucks.
Operate specialized job-related equipment, including pneumatic tools.
Work with heavy equipment requiring good motor coordination and physical strength.
Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Read and understand schematic diagrams and manuals.
Experience and Education

Two years of responsible experience similar to Streets Maintenance Worker I with the City of Hanford.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class B driver’s license with tanker and air brake endorsements.
Ability to obtain work zone traffic control certification within the first 12 months of employment.
