Overview:

A Senior Line Patroller works as a part of a team managing on-hill risk, executing mountain rescues, responding to medical emergencies, and providing a safe and welcoming environment to the public. This role supports less-experienced staff in their learning processes and assists Patrol Department leaders as needed to help manage resources and emergency scenes. The ideal candidate exercises sound judgment with consideration of effects on other departments and the company. The Senior Line Patroller reports to a Patrol Manager, the Assistant Patrol Director, or the Patrol Director. Daily work is performed under the general supervision of an Area Foreman. Direct supervision is rare; most daily tasks must be completed independently. 

Responsibilities:
  • Performs all duties of Line Patroller as needed or as appropriate from a teamwork perspective; specific modifications include:  
  • Safely skis or rides any mapped terrain in any conditions without ski poles and while carrying tools or equipment 
  • Safely travels any terrain within ski resort boundary, including areas not named on the trail map 
  • Conducts mountain rescue operations on any mapped terrain in any conditions 
  • Directs the use of ropes, carabiners, and pulleys in special rescue situations  
  • Supports newer Line Patrollers and Patrol Foremen in positive and proactive ways; draws from experience to drive solutions and help the team be successful 
  • Anticipates and communicates potential needs based on radio traffic and observations 
  • When necessary and appropriate, assists the Area Foreman in the temporary supervision of their staff and resources 
  • Manages emergency scenes: 
  • Responds to scenes that are likely to benefit from a leadership role 
  • Identifies potential hazards and ensures scene safety o Thinks critically about resources 
  • Anticipates next steps and directs team members 
  • Tactfully replaces team members when necessary for safety or for good patient care  
  • Identifies significant incidents and red flags; protects the scene, notifies Patrol management team, and gathers information during the incident that may be required for an incident investigation 
  • Participates in the incident investigation process as directed by On-Hill Supervisor or Patrol management team 
  • Functions as a Ground Team Leader during lift evacuation procedures as needed 
  • When needed, serves as assistant trainer in most training settings 
  • Assists with odd jobs, special projects, and off-hours needs, helping the resort team as a whole 
  • Immediately requests assistance from the Area Foreman, the On-Hill Supervisor, or a member of the Patrol management team whenever appropriate 
  • Demonstrates an interest in self-improvement, the improvement of the Patrol Department, and the success of Sunday River Resort 
  • Follows policies and procedures set within the Patrol SOPPs, the Patrol Handbook, and the Sunday River Team Member Handbook 
  • Assists in guiding and teaching less-experienced staff in all of the above 
Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age  
  • High School Diploma  
  • At least 5 seasons of experience as a full-time ski patroller 
  • One or more full seasons of experience as a full-time Sunday River Line Patroller 
  • Demonstrated high-level proficiency in Line Patroller knowledge and skillset 
  • Must have an EMT, WFR, or OEC certification or greater at time of hire. Within the first 2 seasons, attains and maintains current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certification  
  • Current healthcare provider CPR/AED certification  
  • Expert-level ski or snowboard ability  
  • Comfortable working with children and adults of all ages  
  • Calm, professional demeanor; inclusive; accepting  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills  
  • Confidence in handling stressful situations, including difficult guest interactions  

 

Recommended Qualifications  

  • Other experience working in the customer service or hospitality industry  
  • Other experience in healthcare, especially in an emergency setting  
  • Other experience with climbing or rescue tools, such as ropes, carabiners, and friction devices; and techniques, such as belaying or mechanical advantage systems  
  • Maintains EMT, WFR, or other external medical certification  
  • Credentialed as PSPA Certified, NSP Senior, or NSP Certified
