Description
The Director of Finance is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing Legal Aid of Nebraska’s financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, financial planning, and reporting. This role ensures compliance with funding source requirements, internal policies, and applicable laws. The Director of Finance provides strategic financial guidance to the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, and the Management Team to support the organization's mission and goals.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Implementation
- Provide financial leadership by overseeing the organization's budget development, cash flow, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
- Prepare and present timely and accurate financial reports to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and funders.
- Serve as a member of the Leadership Team, contributing to organizational strategy and equitable resource allocation.
- Lead strategic planning, policy development, and long-term sustainability initiatives.
Financial Operations
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, financial statements, grant tracking, and internal financial systems.
- Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, and grantor financial requirements.
- Manage accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Lead audits and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and improve financial procedures.
Leadership & Team Management
- Provide direction and support to the finance teams, fostering a collaborative, goal-oriented work environment.
- Work cross-functionally with program leaders and administrative staff to align initiatives with organizational priorities and budget needs.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations and grant managers to ensure sound financial oversight of funded projects.
- Represent Legal Aid of Nebraska in meetings with partners, funders, and stakeholders as needed.
Requirements
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in financial management, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
Preferred Requirements:
- Prior experience with grant financial compliance and reporting.
- CPA certification (preferred but not required).
- Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Ability to develop relationships with internal staff, community partners, and funding agencies.
- Demonstrated expertise in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and accounting.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to accuracy and detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong supervisory and team leadership capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
