Description
Good Harvest Market, Waukesha County's largest independently-owned and dedicated natural & organics grocer, is currently seeking to hire an Assistant Grocery Manager to work directly with our Grocery Manager/Purchasing Lead to lead and advance our Grocery Team.
This is a full-time opportunity that requires flexible availability and an ability to work a blend of daytime and evening shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed. Our retail scheduling is based on the department needs.
This is a physical position requiring the frequent lifting of inventory, along with continuous standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and climbing. The right candidate should enjoy physical labor and be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
This is also a customer service focused role. All members of our team, but especially representatives of our management team, must be able to provide friendly service with a smile and have a genuine interest in learning about our products so they can best answer customer questions and help provide them with great service.
At least 2-3 years of relevant retail experience is required. Previous supervisory experience will be preferred, but we will train the right candidate.

Full Job Description:
Position: Assistant Grocery Manager
Reports to: Grocery Manager/Purchasing Lead
Status: Full-Time, Non-exempt
Supervises: Grocery Clerks
Department: Grocery
Purpose: To work with the Grocery Manager/Purchasing Lead to supervise grocery clerks, ensuring proper training and guidance to meet store objectives and mission standards, while also overseeing the selection, pricing and promotion of products to meet store objectives for sales, margin, labor, and customer service.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Service
- Knows and adheres to quality standards for customer service, leads staff by example.
- Greets all customers, offers suggestions/answers as needed.
- Adheres to all guidelines around product recommendation and information.
- Assists in any other departments as needed.
Personnel Management
- Responsible for timely writing and release of weekly schedule under the supervision of the Grocery Manager
- Ensure thorough on-the-job training of new team members, and ongoing training and development of current staff.
- Work with the Grocery Manager to hold team members accountable for maintaining productivity and following policies and procedures.
- Work with the Grocery Manager to complete staff evaluations.
- Organize and attend meetings for staff as needed.
- Ensure safe working practices and safety training for department staff.
Merchandising
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices and terms, quality and delivery, following Good Harvest Market product guidelines.
- Attend meetings to plan promotions, product mix decisions, store merchandising and advertising.
- Set standards for stocking. Oversee grocery staff members in maintaining an attractive and fully stocked store.
- Ensure that department follows signage standards.
- Coordinate planning of store layout and product locations for sales volume, aesthetics and shopping and stocking efficiency.
- Work with Grocery Manager to monitor store resets and give feedback to upper management/ownership.
- Visit other stores for ideas on promotions and displays.
Purchasing
- Follow guidelines for department in ordering to obtain favorable prices, terms, quality and delivery.
- Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources of supply.
- Review department financial reports and take action where needed to meet sales, margin, turns and labor goals.
- Participate in inventory counts.
- Ensure a fresh and dynamic grocery product mix by reviewing movement reports, discontinuing slow-movers, and picking up new items.
- Place grocery special orders for customers. Review all grocery product requests.
- Monitor ingredients of all grocery items to conform to GHM product standards.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with coverage in departments as needed.
- Attend team meetings and store wide meetings.
- Perform other tasks assigned by the Grocery Manager.
- Assist customers in all departments, in prompt friendly courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
- Bag groceries in the front end as needed.
- Retrieve carts from the parking lot as needed.
- Answer & route phone calls.

Requirements
REQUIREMENTS
- 2–3 years of grocery/retail industry experience.
- 1 year minimum supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of merchandising, inventory control, ordering, and shrink reduction.
- Familiarity with food safety and sanitation standards.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel and Word programs.
- Ability to read financial statements; firm grasp of margin and pricing.
- Organized, consistently follows through on commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands.
- Communications skills--clear directions, good listener.
- Experience serving the public.
- Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment (ex: baler, pallets and pallet jacks).
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly.

- Ability to work in cold, wet conditions.
- Willingness to work a blend of daytime, evening and weekend shifts as needed.
