The Laboratory Technologist POC administers and coordinates the technical activities of Point of Care Testing (POCT) across the entire health system. This role ensures the effective technical operation of equipment and testing systems, in adherence to established practices and regulatory requirements for medical diagnostic testing at or near the Point of Care. The Laboratory Technologist POC plays a critical role in supporting non-laboratory personnel and ensuring accurate and reliable point of care testing to support timely decision-making, enhance patient care, and promote the overall quality and safety of healthcare services provided.
Responsibilities
Evaluates, coordinates, and monitors Point of Care activities, ensuring implementation and updates of procedures and instrumentation to promote accurate and reliable testing practices and support quality patient care. Educates testing staff, schedules classes, and develops teaching materials for Point of Care procedures and instrumentation, including initial training and recertification to ensure competent testing staff, consistent testing practices, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Provides consulting services for Point of Care testing, troubleshooting issues with testing and reporting, and offering guidance and support to enable timely resolution of issues and enhance the efficiency of Point of Care testing. Provides input on new Point of Care instrumentation, considering cost management and regulatory requirements to inform procurement decisions and support informed decision-making. Performs maintenance and installation of Point of Care software and hardware, including software revisions and updates to ensure reliable Point of Care systems and accurate testing results. Maintains a procedure and policy database for Point of Care testing areas, assisting in the development, implementation, and updates of procedures to promote consistency.Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:Required: Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science.EXPERIENCE:Required: Two years in a non-waived laboratory. Must be able to serve as a CLIA Technical ConsultantLICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:Preferred: ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification or equivalent certification by: NCA (National Certification Agency) AMT (American Medical Technologist) HEW (Health, Education, & Welfare)Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist Certification from one of the following upon hire: ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or AMT (American Medical Technologists)
