Job Summary: The responsibility of all auxiliary personnel is to assist and work under the supervision of the professional staff for the purpose of facilitating maximum positive impact on the education of children. Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, assist teacher with comprehensive educational and functional training to students with disabilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists teacher in maintaining an effective learning environment.
Follows teacher’s directions to maintain a clean and orderly learning environment.
Effectively monitors behavior according to behavior modification and intervention plans.
Maintains awareness of students’ whereabouts and assignments.
Provides the appropriate level of supervision of students during recreational periods, bus duty, field trips, and other assigned periods.
Continuously monitors the health and safety of students and becomes familiar with behaviors and disabilities.
Assists in direct academic, supportive, and functional instruction to students as directed by the assigned teacher.
Makes or modifies instructional materials under the supervision of the assigned teacher within the established timeframes.
Operates copier and other equipment as needed to produce program related materials.
Provides appropriate physical care of assigned students to maintain their cleanliness, safety, and comfort by providing appropriate instruction and direct assistance with toileting, dressing, and feeding (with utensils or tube feeding).
Assists with documentation and organization of materials as directed by the assigned teacher.
Consistently complies with departmental regulations on confidentiality.
Refer parents to the assigned teacher when there are questions or concerns.
Display appropriate interpersonal skills with teacher, staff, and students.
Notify school and teacher when absent as soon as possible.
Reports to assigned classrooms and duty stations according to school schedule.
Dress professionally for the job.
Attend professional learning classes as required by the school or district.
Performs and other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications: The individual must be able to perform each essential job duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed to perform the job at a fully acceptable level.
Education, Experience, and/or Certification:
Must hold or be eligible to hold a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission Clearance Certificate and Georgia Paraprofessional Certificate. Paraprofessional certification requires a high school diploma or equivalent and that the applicant passed the Praxis Parapro Assessment (prior to March 1, 2007) or the GACE Parapro Assessment. In lieu of assessments, 60 semester or 90 quarter hours from a Professional Standards Commission (PSC) approved college or university are required for issuance of the paraprofessional certification.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of basic subject matters such Math, English, Science, and Social Studies.
Knowledge of the practices of teaching.
Knowledge of the equipment operation and other aids utilized in the classroom.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to get along with students and staff.
Ability to observe and accurately report the behavior of others.
Ability to learn rules and regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively.
