About the Department
Under direction, performs any type of required manual labor or general maintenance duties in the field of public works as assigned and learns various routines and procedures related to these activities; does related work as required.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs manual heavy physical work such as loading, unloading, carrying and stocking all types of materials, supplies, tools and equipment. Uses hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes, tampers and brooms in digging, filling, weeding, leveling, compacting and cleaning. Assists other more experienced workers as routine helper. Follows oral directions; observes and learns routines, procedures, tools, safety precautions and locations involved in the work of the crew or crews to which assigned. Performs other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school grad or equivalent G.E.D., good work history, and one (1) year of verifiable experience in general maintenance, repair or construction work.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Must have average mechanical aptitude and comprehension; ability to follow oral directions related to this work; to read and comprehend simple written statements such as found in crew work orders; to work harmoniously in a small crew; to learn routines and procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed mainly outdoors and may require frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 100 pounds. Incumbents may be exposed to repetitive motion, including but not limited to vibrations in the use of a jackhammer; to extreme temperatures and inclement weather, and to hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
LICENSE
Must have and maintain a valid California Class B Driver's License.
