About the Department
The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for an Evidence Technician for the Jefferson City Police Department. This position performs maintenance and process criminal evidence; testify in court; and perform general technical duties in support of the police department's mission.
Position Duties
Enters, maintains, releases and provides security of evidence and found property submitted by officers. Maintains detailed records on each item collected as evidence.
Transports evidence to crime labs for testing.
Prepares evidence and presents testimony in court regarding the maintenance and processing of evidence, test results, and findings. Handles all requests for evidence for exhibits at trial and requests by attorneys or officers.
Develops, maintains, and inputs various detailed records into computer database management program, and maintains accuracy of information.
Provides information and assistance to officers and attorneys regarding status of case evidence.
Returns processed items to owners and assists with evidence identification for disposal.
Handles evidence money collected by officers, completes deposits, and accounts for funds.
Provides training and guidance to officers in collection, handling, and storage of evidence.
Minimum Qualifications
Physical: Ability to sit up to eight hours a day at a computer; lift and carry heavy objects; and present testimony in court as a witness.
Mental: Ability to operate office machines and computer; establish and maintain effective working relationships; prioritize and organize work; work with public in a calm and effective manner; manage multiple tasks; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and two years responsible office experience in a police department. An associate degree and three years’ experience with a law enforcement agency with duties closely related to this position is preferred.
Must have a valid Missouri Drivers' License.
Other Qualifications
This position generally works 8:00 AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday per week. However, this position may require after hours to assist with evidence processing at major crime scenes.
