Duties
The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 6 months (1,039 hours) work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. The Sign Painter works independently to design, fabricate, and install pedestrian and vehicle wayfinding signs, traffic signs, regulatory and safety signs, visitor information signs and interpretive panels. Duties include: - Employee must have knowledge of sign construction and maintenance techniques and must be able to recognize existing and future maintenance problems. - Can teach and demonstrate sign installation methods and techniques to lower graded park staff and volunteers. - Performs and leads carpentry work at a high level of competency, often taking on the most complicated phases of project work assigned to the crew, and occasionally leads lower graded workers, volunteers, and interns in these tasks. -Employee must have knowledge of sign making related software programs Gerber Omega and Flexi and be able to adjust the size and shape of graphics and text to fit set parameters. -Transports tools, materials, employees, vehicles, and equipment with variety of vehicles weighing under 26,000 GVW to job sites. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in fabricating and installing signs. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: carries objects weighing - 40 to 60 lbs, frequently hikes up to 8 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, signs and digging tools. The incumbent may spend up to nine hours a day digging holes and installing signs and posts. Working Conditions: This work is performed indoors and outdoors on high, narrow, steep, and congested trails at elevations that rise approximately 1000 to 2000 feet in above sea level This work is also performed in urban areas of high pedestrian and traffic congestion. It is performed in all types of weather and involves exposure to extreme heat, dampness, wind, dust, and noise. Sign installation involves the use of ladders and lifts which will expose the incumbent to heights sometime requiring fall protection. This job will also require the incumbent to work occasionally around and near Poison Oak and in areas where stinging insects and ticks may be a hazard.
Requirements
U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Housing maybe available You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Sign Painter (MVO) without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Practices in Construction, Structure. Dexterity and Safety. Knowledge of materials. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, etc. (other than blueprints), If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
