About the Department

 

The Planning & Zoning Technician performs technical and administrative work in support of the Development Services Department. This position involves frequent communication with the public and requires strong interpersonal skills.

Position Duties

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position.   • Provides technical guidance to the public on zoning regulations, development processes, and application requirements
  • Reviews zoning applications and site plans for completeness and compliance with basic code standards (e.g., setbacks, permitted uses)
  • Participates in pre-application and zoning inquiry meetings; communicates code requirements and advises on project feasibility
  • Collaborates with Planning staff to create information packets for the Planning & Zoning Commission and Board of County Commissioners
  • Attends Planning & Zoning Commission meetings; prepares official meeting minutes and comprehensive summaries of action for the Board of County Commissioners 
  • Drafts decision letters, public notices, and correspondence related to zoning applications and commission decisions
  • Prepares and coordinates mailings and notifications to applicants, property owners, and other stakeholders
  • Maintains accurate tracking and records for assigned projects and supports the overall organization of division files and systems
  • Performs assignments under the guidance of the Development Services Director and Senior Planner, supporting the completion of projects and division objectives
  • Maintains a current knowledge of zoning codes, land use regulations, and permit processes
  • Provides backup support to the Administrative Assistant and Planning staff, assuming additional duties in their absence
  • Communicates effectively with internal staff, management, and external stakeholders to coordinate tasks and resolve issues
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed public record by the North Dakota Century Code.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
    1. Planning, zoning, land use, permitting, or reviewing development applications and site plans
    2. Code compliance or property development
    3. Professional customer service or administrative support involving significant public interaction
          OR 
                   an associate degree in planning, public administration, geography, urban studies, or a closely related field

  • Must possess a valid North Dakota driver’s license or equivalent
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Must be available to attend Planning & Zoning Commission meetings at 6:00 PM on the third Thursday of each month

Compensation: $26.11-$29.24 depending on experience and training. Williams County provides a generous benefit package to full time employees, including a fully-paid health/dental/vision plan for the entire family, retirement benefits through the ND Public Employees Retirement System, paid sick and vacation leave and 12 paid holidays each year.
