About the Department

Long Beach Utilities provides safe, clean, reliable and affordable water, gas, and sewer services to the Long Beach community. The service area supports 500,000 customers, represented by 90,000 water accounts, 145,000 gas accounts and 90,000 sewer accounts in 52 square miles. This service area includes Long Beach’s downtown core, waterfront accounts, suburban areas and dense multifamily portions of the region. The department also provides natural gas service to residents and businesses in the City of Signal Hill. As a municipal utility, Long Beach Utilities’ natural gas rates and policies are established by the Board of Utilities Commission, consisting of five residents of Long Beach.
The Long Beach Utilities Department has immediate openings for Water Utility Worker I - Non-Career in the Water Services, Sewer Operations, Water Construction, and Water Treatment Divisions. This position is a non-career, unclassified position and may work at a variety of locations within the City of Long Beach.
Position Duties
- Under direct supervision, performs heavy manual, semi-skilled and skilled work in the installation, maintenance, operation, testing, and repair of water distribution, wastewater collection system, or water treatment and sewer lift station facilities and components.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces water mains, water services, control valves, meters, fire hydrants, and other water distribution system components.
- Operates high-velocity jetters cleaning sanitary sewer lines or other collection system facilities and inspecting sewer lines utilizing closed-circuit televisions equipment.
- Operates trucks, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, and related construction equipment.
- Cleans, inspects, repairs, and replaces sewer lines, water lines, and chemical lines.
- Maintains Treatment Plant facilities.
- Performs basic field and laboratory analysis.
- Assists in repair and/or installation of pumps, chemical feed systems, and treatment equipment.
- Excavates, shores, backfills, and compacts trenches.
- Responds to service calls from customers, stakeholders, and the public.
- May handle or transport various chemicals used in the treatment process.
- Follows all safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must possess a valid driver's license (California license required within three months if applying from out of state.)
- Ability to learn and safely perform unskilled or semiskilled work in a maintenance or technical occupation.
- Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and procedures, listen and follow verbal instructions, and follow rules and regulations.
- Ability to read independently at a high school level to complete reading assignments involving concepts of water treatment/water distribution/water quality/wastewater collection, operations, and maintenance.
- Ability to use common hand and power tools.
- Ability to endure long periods of physical labor.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public.
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic and ability to grasp, understand, and perform mathematical computations.
- Ability to properly lift up to 90 lbs. without assistance for construction related positions and 50 lbs without assistance for Treatment Plant positions.
- Ability to work in full respirator without restrictions (Treatment Plant positions) and half-face respirator (Water Construction, Water Services, and Sewer Operations positions).
- When assigned standby duty, ability to respond to emergency call-outs on a 24-hour basis and report to designated location within 30 minutes.
- Ability to work various hours/shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Experience in a water treatment facility, water, or wastewater agency.
- Experience in any of the following areas: general construction, operation of various building or construction-related equipment, operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment, mechanical repair and/or maintenance, pipeline infrastructure, plumbing, carpentry, welding, or other trade-related work.
- Commercial driver's license (Class A or B.)
- Possession of water industry certifications such as the Water Treatment Operator or Water Distribution Operator certification from the State Water Resources Control Board or California Department of Public Health or the Collection System Maintenance certification from the California Water Environment Association.
- Associate degree or higher in biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, environmental engineering, microbiology, public health, or sanitary engineering.
- Associate degree or certificate in Water or Wastewater Technology that includes at least 15 units of physical, chemical, or biological science.
