SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Transportation Manager oversees all transportation needs for the commissary. The TM is responsible for routing, re-routing and planning all logistics for food to be safely transported from the commissary to all clients in a timely manner. The TM also ensures cold meal and congregate pack-out accuracy, loading and delivery accuracy and strives for quality, excellent customer service, no re-deliveries, good SOP adherence, and a dedication to hiring, training and managing a high-quality team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in partnership with the culinary and administrative teams, and internal and external partners to ensure all steps from order verification to meal pack-out to meal delivery and return of fleet and equipment are safe and timely
- Partner with culinary team to ensure driver corps assists with any necessary daily production or packout
- Work with administrative and culinary teams with meal labels to ensure meal counts are accurate for quality control, meals are packed out in proper order and hot meals ovens and cold meal coolers are cleaned daily
- Oversee driver corps’ bags and route sheet sorting and distribution, and ensure that delivery receipts are signed off at sites and returned by all drivers to TM each day
- Serve as oversight and management for drivers and ensure that staff time is managed to ensure adequate staffing is in place to manage deliveries
- Manage all HR issues for drivers in partnership with HR, Commissary Manager II and Chief Commissary Officer including solid onboarding, training, daily support and remediation when necessary
- Assist with product pickups for last minute procurement needs
- Ensure all fleet needs are coordinated with facilities team and that all labor assigned to drivers is complete
- Oversee all logistics including scheduling drivers, routing deliveries, ensuring all routes are released on a timely basis, that all drivers are trained in safety and emergency procedures, that deliveries are made in a timely manner, that drivers treat all they come in contact with on the road, at sites and in the public with courtesy, excellent customer service and respect
- Ensure the drivers are trained in and follow all fleet procedures to ensure a full tank and fluid top-offs each night and a.m. and p.m. multipoint pre- and post-trip inspections are conducted daily prior to leaving and upon returning to the commissary
- Periodically audit the geo-records for efficiency and utilize those records to ensure drivers are where they should be
- Coordinate with facilities team to ensure fleet PM is managed; ensure drivers maintain fleet in pristine condition inside and out and ensure all fleet are cleaned exterior weekly and interiors are thoroughly tidied daily and deep cleaned weekly to ensure the utmost food safety
- Ensure drains are disinfected, manage a daily fleet internal and external audit and lockup fleet
- Review vehicle dash camera footage daily and issue disciplinary action timely in coordination with Human Resources for any violations of policies and procedures
- Ensure that all drivers read, understand and correctly answer the monthly Penske driver safety quiz
- Assist with all mission work as needed and requested with some or no prior notice including, but not limited to, serving as a truck spotter, helping with Farm Market/Community Garden/Freight Farms/on and off-site food distributions, preparation of meals and serving home-delivered meals.
- Assist with all sanitation/QA efforts throughout the facility; maintain/clean/organize coolers and freezers
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Minimum five years’ experience in driver management and logistics
- Ability to manage periods of high stress, emergency situations, including managing time-sensitive matters
- Excellent interpersonal, written, oral communication skills; ability to effectively lead and manage team members
- Ability to use and learn routing software and other basic software as needed to complete position responsibilities
- Knowledge of and experience in training and practicing proper driver safety standards
- Must have solid math, reading, writing and analytical abilities and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability and willingness to work with populations of varying educational levels and backgrounds effectively
- Must be able to tolerate sudden and extreme changes in temperatures
- Must be able to withstand and work in extended exposure to cold temperatures (greater than two hours per day)
- Must be able to climb on a ladder the distance of 5 feet to reach stored items and carry them to the floor
- Must be able to stand for at least 8 hours a day; lift 50 pounds and have dexterity
