About the Department
The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George's County is an unprecedented six-time National Gold Medal Award winner for excellence in park and recreation management. This award is given by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The Northern Recreation & Leisure Services Division is seeking a talented Assistant Director. The selected candidate must be creative, customer service oriented and able to work well in a team environment.
Please note that the salary above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for these positions is $56,358 - $78,087. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Position Duties
Facility Management:
- Assist in managing a community center. Establish, recommends and monitor operating procedures (i.e. hours, building maintenance and repairs).
- Respond to questions, complaints, and inquiries from patrons
- Work with Facility Management to plan routine maintenance, repairs and renovations to building and grounds
- Handles rental program - review, approve, and prepare rental requests/agreements for weddings, rehearsals, meetings, ceremonies, community events
Programming:
Plans, organizes, and implements recreation activities, classes, programs, and special events for a specific facility in the northern area of Prince George’s County.
Market programs for facility. Prepare and distribute flyers, rack cards, ads, posters, and other marketing materials to promote attendance.
Visit schools and other groups to provide community outreach and inform them of recreation and leisure opportunities.
Perform on divisional and departmental committee assignments.
Personnel Management:
- Supervise intermittent, volunteer, and contracted employees.
- Recruit, interview, select, and train intermittent staff for the community center and programs
- Complete, at minimum, an annual performance evaluation for intermittent staff
- Counsel and discipline employees as directed
- Plan, schedule, and assign work. Approve timecards for intermittent staff.
Fiscal Management:
- Monitor and track expenditures for programs and projects within approved budget for the community center assigned.
- Serve as petty cash fund custodian (if applicable)
- Prepare check request, purchase card request, purchase requisitions, personnel action forms, mileage reimbursements, and other administrative reports.
- Collect fees and deposit revenues
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Facility Management, Education, Business Administration, Physical Education, Communication, Leisure Services, or any related field.
- One (1) year of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, leisure services, or area of required specialty (e.g., arts, performing arts, tennis, aquatics, ice rinks).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
- Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
- Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require valid: (a) operating license (e.g., county pool operator, childcare license) as appropriate; (b) First Aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) certifications; or (c) certifications as related to assignment (e.g., Lifeguard Instruction, Fundamentals of Gymnastics).
- Pass Commission medical exam.
