How We Serve
The Neighborhood and Business Safety (Code Enforcement) Division encompasses three functions: Code Enforcement, Business Licensing and Permits, and Animal Care and Control. The Division's primary goal is to maintain the City's unique urban balance with emphasis on neighborhood livability by recognizing diverse and competing interests and working to find balance and provide collaborative public safety by promoting traditional and non-traditional approaches.

What You'll Contribute
The Neighborhood and Business Safety Division seeks a Code Enforcement Officer who will play a vital role in bridging world-class establishments and residents, maintaining the perfect balance between thriving businesses and vibrant neighborhoods. In this role, you’ll work with prestigious venues, acclaimed restaurants, and luxury hotels to ensure our city remains a premier destination while preserving the quality of life and safety of our community.

The Code Enforcement Officer independently performs complex technical functions related to code compliance and regulatory business license enforcement including: receiving code violation complaints, conducting investigations, notifying property/business owners of violations, and explaining required corrections. The Code Enforcement Officer may be responsible for monitoring special events, interacting with a variety of high-level individuals, preparing and maintaining case documentation for prosecution of violators, and conducting nighttime compliance investigations with staff and law enforcement personnel.

The City’s Code Enforcement function is a seven-day-a-week operation that provides service to the community from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. This position may require a work schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays, and during major events (e.g. WeHo Pride or West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval).  Please note: a 10% increase in hourly pay is assigned to all hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and holiday pay is paid at one-and-one-half (1 ½) times the hourly rate of pay.

The ideal candidate brings:
  • Current public sector experience with a background/knowledge in code enforcement functions.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a natural ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong conflict resolution abilities and the composure to navigate challenging situations with a professional and collaborative attitude.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, investigating, and resolving complex code compliance complaints and violations.
  • Experience in court case preparation and testimony related to misdemeanor offenses, civil actions, and administrative citations.
  • Excellent writing skills to document inspections and respond to a variety of written requests from the public.
  • Penal Code 832 Certification (Must obtain within 6 months of hire.).
  • Code Enforcement Officer Certification (desirable).
  • Ability to speak Spanish or Russian (preferred).
  • Possesses an Associate’s or Bachelor’s College Degree (preferred).

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: 
  • High school diploma or GED; and,
  • One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Penal Code 832 (Must obtain within 6 months of hire.)
  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Code Enforcement Officer Certification (desirable)
