Position Summary

The College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) invites applications for the role of Writing Center Content and Outreach Coordinator, a part-time, 9-month staff position focused on expanding the impact of the Writing Center at the University of Detroit Mercy. 


CHASS prides itself in providing support and services that ensure students’ success as they progress toward graduation while attending to their overall personal and professional development. The Writing Center Content and Outreach Coordinator will join a vibrant community committed to a student-centered experience that extends from the classroom to academic advising and support services. The Writing Center, while located in CHASS, serves the entire University community.


The primary duties of the Writing Center Content and Outreach Coordinator will include creating learning and marketing materials, contributing to strategic planning initiatives for the Writing Center, creating and providing development sessions to the student community, and engaging in creative outreach efforts to promote Writing Center services. 

  

Applications submitted by September 26, 2025, will receive full consideration. The anticipated start date is November 3, 2025.  The Writing Center Content and Outreach Coordinator will report directly to the Writing Center Director. 


The Coordinator will have excellent written and oral communication skills, be experienced in supporting student writers, and be knowledgeable about writing, designing, and sharing educational content. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Writing new content for learning resources (brochures and handouts) and creating multi-modal content for marketing and promoting the Writing Center’s services via online conduits.
  • Assisting the Director with strategic planning for the future of the Writing Center including researching current trends in pedagogy, writing center theory, and teaching and learning with technology (including but not limited to A.I.).
  • Engaging in outreach efforts including providing learning sessions to the campus community, developing new relationships with stakeholders to create more opportunities for collaborations, and participating in campus events.
  • Engaging in scholarship and professional development.

Requirements

   

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree or MFA from an accredited higher education institution.
  • At least one year working in a Writing Center as a tutor, consultant, or administrator.
  • An understanding of writing center theory and practice.
  • Experience teaching first-year writing courses at the college level.
  • Experience creating engaged, student-centered learning sessions.
  • Basic design skills to produce engaging pamphlets, handouts, and presentations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. 
  • The ability to collaborate with and mentor student consultants. 
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience using the Blackboard Learning Management System (or similar).
  • Knowledge of social media applications to share learning content.
  • Experience using Camtasia or similar video editing software.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners.
  • Fluency in a language or languages other than English.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

At least one year working in a Writing Center as a tutor, consultant, or administrator.


Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).


Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
