About the Department

The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for the direct planning, execution, and oversight of the pharmacy’s operational activities, ensuring the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care and services to Pascua Yaqui Health Services Division (PYHSD) patients. In this role the Pharmacy Manager must be able to demonstrate a high level of self-initiative to successfully perform all essential functions, duties, tasks, assignments, and responsibilities for the successful administration and management of the pharmacy. As a Licensed Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Manager is also responsible for all the essential functions, responsibilities, and authority of a Pharmacist such as dispensing medications and drugs prescribed by physicians and other health care practitioners, and for providing counseling and information to patients about these medications and their use. The incumbent in this position works with administrative supervision and has discretion and independent judgment authority with respect to matters of significance in respect to pharmacy operations and pharmaceutical patient care.

Position Duties

  • Ensures that all goals and objectives specified for the pharmacy are successfully accomplished to the highest service level possible and in accordance with the established priorities, timelines, assigned budget, and deliverables.
  • Ensures the successful performance and/or completion of all administrative and supervisory duties, tasks, and assignments supporting pharmacy operations are within established time frames; meeting established rates of performance for the quality and quantity of work for the position.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and manages the risks and challenges presented or inherent to the pharmacy and its operation.
  • Ensures that all pharmacy staff maintains patient confidentiality standards ensuring compliance with all HIPAA and corporate compliance standards, as well as accepted confidentiality standards.
  • Responsible for the effective daily operation of the pharmacy, maintaining pharmacy operations in compliance with all Federal and State laws and rules governing pharmacy operations and controlled substance inventories, distribution, and records management.
  • Serves as the primary contact point for all complaints, questions, or requests regarding the pharmacy and its activities or services.
  • Performs and completes all the duties and responsibilities of a Licensed Pharmacist, ensuring high quality pharmaceutical care is delivered to patients in a timely and efficient manner, examples of which include:
  • Serves as a drug information resource to patients, providers and internal clients on medication related questions or matters.
  • Provides patient counseling, drug information, drug therapy consultation, health promotion and disease prevention related to medication use.
  • Counsel’s health care providers regarding drug interactions, indications, drug dosage and side effects. Communicates with and verifies a patient’s understanding of medications and desired outcomes of the drug therapy.
  • Reviews and ensures the appropriateness of drug therapy, collaborating with the health care team members.
  • Manages and supervises all assigned staff members prioritizing and assigning work. coordinating, monitoring and supervising department members by providing guidance and direction on the successful completion of assigned tasks, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Supervises and provides direction to all assigned staff members relative to performance management and completion of evaluations, employee discipline, as well as problem and/or conflict resolution; provides recommendations as to the employment or retention status of department members.
  • Participates in the recruitment, orientation, and training of department members for the various required duties, responsibilities, and assignments within the department.
  • Ensures that all staff members are properly trained; communicates with all staff members regarding individual or team performance; coordinates meeting with staff members on any performance or discipline related discussions or actions when required; ensures that all assigned performance appraisals are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Serves as liaison for pharmacy patients, providers, pharmacy students, staff and internal clients, bringing any issues, complaints, problems, or requests to timely and effective resolution.
  • Researches and provides recommendations to pharmacy leadership on improvements or enhancements to pharmacy operations or policies and procedures.
  • Gains and maintains a comprehensive understanding of all organizational money handling policies and procedures; oversees and ensures compliance by staff members performing pharmacy cashiering activities, reinforcing a high level of accuracy and a minimal error rate by these employees.
  • Ensures and supports the cost-effective use of medications, materials, supplies, and equipment by limiting waste of all pharmacy or organizational supplies and resources.
  • Demonstrates an exceptional level of customer service, answering and responding to all inquiries, complaints, incoming calls, or emails in a timely and effective manner.
  • Develops and maintains a collaborative and effective working relationship with patients, providers, internal clients, and organizational personnel regarding pharmacy operations, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Employees must maintain their skills proficiency with PYHSD pharmacy operating systems and/or software programs by adapting to changing requirements and successfully learning and demonstrating new skills in response to software, system, and program improvements or upgrades.

  • Supervises and provides direction to all assigned staff members relative to performance management and completion of evaluations, employee discipline, as well as problem and/or conflict resolution; directly responsible for scheduling staff and employee training; provides recommendations as to the employment or retention status of department members, as assigned.
  • Ability to read, interpret, comprehend, and comply with written documents or instructions furnished through various modes including written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.
  • Ability to listen, communicate, and always interact with a wide range of diverse individuals and personalities in a professional manner.
  • Intermediate skills in successfully operating computer equipment and general software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, database programs, as well a general understanding and skill working with enterprise software programs.
  • Ability and skill in correctly applying drug calculations, mathematical or basic algebraic calculations and concepts to all work processing.
  • Understanding and knowledge of successful pharmacy administration and management; demonstration of the ability and competence in general pharmacy operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of drugs, drug dosing, side effects, indications, contraindications, and proper administration.
  • Ability to implement and maintain quality, infection, or safety control standards.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment presenting multiple priorities.

Other Qualifications

Must successfully graduate from an accredited College of Pharmacy. Three (3) years’ experience as a Pharmacist. Five (5) years’ management experience, preferably in a health care or pharmacy environment

Preferred:
Five (5) years’ experience as a Pharmacies
Seven (7) years’ management experience, preferably in a health care or pharmacy environment

Required:

  • A current Pharmacist License in at least one state.
  • Employees in this position are required to have reliable transportation during the workday. If an employee is driving during work hours, the employee is required to possess a valid driver’s license and must follow Arizona vehicle insurance requirements.
Special Requirements:
  • CPR & First Aid Certification required
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends.
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination from this position.
