JOB TITLE: Director of Transportation
LOCATION: Bus Garage
REPORTS TO: Superintendent

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Transportation is responsible for providing safe, suitable, and economical transportation services for all eligible students in accordance with Federal and State laws and School Board policies. The Transportation Director is responsible for overseeing all training and required professional development for school division bus drivers, car drivers, and substitute bus/car drivers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following:
Serves as primary division contact for transportation policy implementation and leadership of the school division transportation department, including pupil transportation, fleet management, vehicle maintenance and overall office operations.
Assigns students to appropriate bus routes, including special needs bus routes and out-of-county placement routes.
Promotes an understanding of and adherence to statutes, policies and local, state, and federal regulations related to pupil transportation.
Maintains an up-to-date list of school buses and assigned drivers.
Maintains current knowledge of bus routes and locations to assure timely services and accurate information.
Maintains an inventory system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies.
Manages and oversees the transportation budget
Communicates with bus drivers, dispatching to needed locations to respond to routing requests or emergency situations.
Receives bi-weekly pre-trip reports, student counts/mileage and fuel logs from drivers. Enters data into the database and files in appropriate folders.
Supervises the diagnosing, assigning, and repairing of district automotive equipment and establishes an effective system of routine automotive maintenance and preventative care.
Answers the school division Bus Shop phones and addresses questions and concerns regarding all transportation department matters.
Communicates regularly with teachers and administrators to ensure that schedules/field trips are being accomplished.
Updates and maintains bus route information.
Operates two-way commercial radio for bus drivers.
Receives and processes information according to established guidelines and procedures.
Monitors sign in and sign out sheets to individuals for spare buses and vehicles for school division travel purposes.
Runs school bus routes when required, including in the case of an emergency.
Evaluates weather conditions and makes recommendations for a possible cancellation or alteration of school schedules to the Superintendent.
Performs other assigned duties that are within the area of knowledge and skills required by the job description.
Keep personnel matters confidential. Reports are made only to the appropriate Directors/Superintendent.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High School Graduate or equivalent required.
Licenses Vehicle State Inspection Certification, CDL and School Bus Driver Endorsement required.
Diesel Mechanic certification or knowledge of preferred.
Extensive knowledge of Buckingham County Roads
Working knowledge of a school bus transportation department required.
Willingness to complete necessary training to become a bus driver trainer is highly preferred
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups including bus drivers, school administrators, parents, directors, county officials, and outside placement agencies is a requirement
Ability to check current road conditions quickly
Demonstrated ability to compose effective business communication and advanced spreadsheets in an efficient manner.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work in an office environment with regular interruptions and tight time pressures.
Three years of recent and related experience in a supervisory position strongly preferred.
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Professional Development –Be involved in professional development to the extent necessary to keep abreast of trends and best practices in special education and in the field of general education.
2. Transportation of Equipment – Lift, move, carry and otherwise transport equipment and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
3. Professional and Confidential – Be professional in dealing with school matters. All matters are to be kept confidential. Reports are made to the appropriate person or group.
4. Working with Groups – Serve with colleague and administrative groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
5. Record-keeping –Perform such record-keeping functions as are necessary and appropriate.
6. Public Relations - Demonstrate a positive relationship and good overall customer service with all stakeholders.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
The duties of this position are complex and diverse. Successful candidates must have the ability to multitask, deal with change, show initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with minimal supervision. Must have the ability to sit for extended periods of time in an office environment, see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without visual aids, hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone, speak clearly and in audible tones in person and on the telephone, follow oral and written instructions, and be physically agile to lift up to 25 pounds.

The Superintendent will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
