About the Department

Under the direct supervision within the framework of well-defined policies and procedures, assists in the planning, organization, coordination and implementation of the program or projects as assigned. To provide technical input towards accomplishing project goals as requested. May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is an at-will, temporary position. Incumbents are restricted to extra help, non-benefitted employment status. The purpose of this classification is to provide practical and meaningful work experience related to the student's field of study. County employment should provide the student with exposure to a specific field as a potential or chosen career area, or provide an opportunity for field training for students in professional disciplines who are candidates or graduation, licensing or advanced degrees. Normally, employment will be during breaks in the school year or employment during the school year as part of an internship, work experience or other program sponsored by an accredited educational institution. Limited to 1000 hours per fiscal year.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an office environment; may require off-site fieldwork, depending on the nature of the departments' business; continuous contact with other staff and the public.

Position Duties

(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)

Duties vary in nature according to the department assigned.

Works with county staff to plan, coordinate and implement assigned projects; including assisting in establishing project timelines, creation of project work, safety and contingency plans

Provide technical input to project utilizing knowledge and experience gained through education process.

Performs office and fieldwork assisting the professional, technical and clerical positions for the department hired.

May act as liaison to other governmental agencies and represent the department in providing information to the public, business and other interested groups.

Prepares reports, gathers information, provides information to County staff and the public.

Responds to customer/public requests, prepares correspondence.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education commensurate to work assignment. No experience required.

Special Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License.

Requires enrollment when school is in session with a minimum of nine (9) units, unless otherwise specifically provided for in an college/university's student internship contract. If not currently attending college/university, must be hired/assigned for the purposes of obtaining the skills necessary to meet the qualifications of a professional position within the field and must be no later than two years past graduation from a college/university with major coursework related to the field in which position would be assigned.

Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Basic math skills

Ability to:

Operate modern office equipment and work with various software applications
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Learn and perform a variety of administrative, office, and general support work with minimal guidance and supervision.
Read, interpret, and apply policies, procedures, and regulations.
Follow oral and written directions.
Type or use word processing software at an acceptable speed to meet production requirements.
Gather and organize data and information.
Maintain and update records and reports.
Learn to operate a computer and use department software in the performance of assigned work.
Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other staff when explaining the functions and policies of the work area where assigned.

Selection Process: 
All completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed. Depending upon the number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the examination process may include a screening committee (pass/fail) and/or an oral examination (100%) which may include a written practical component to determine placement on the eligible list.
 
 In accordance with California Government Code section 3100, et., seq., all County of San Benito employees are considered disaster service workers who may be required to report for duty, or remain on duty to address disaster service activities in the event of an emergency or disaster and are required to undertake an applicable loyalty oath.
