DIVISION:   Recreation

 

LOCATION:   Various locations within the Parks and Recreation facilities.

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Recreation Supervisor

 

DIRECTION OF OTHERS: None

 

NATURE OF WORK: Instruction of Water Safety and Swimming Skills to students of all ages and ability levels.

Position Duties

  • Maintain proficient water safety instruction knowledge and techniques.
  • Use sound teaching progressions and techniques to demonstrate skills in reasonably good form and relate lessons to stated objectives.
  • Possess a teaching style which demonstrates enthusiasm, patience, confidence, and ability to relate to children/participants.
  • Maintain a controlled and safe learning environment for all participants.
  • Know emergency procedures and assist in basic first aid and emergency needs.
  • Know, enforce and uphold facility policies and procedures created in accordance with OSHA, the American Red Cross, and Owatonna Parks & Recreation.
  • Follow the appropriate class expectations as listed in the Owatonna Parks & Recreation Aquatics Manual.
  • Acquire the appropriate paperwork and class rosters from the Parks & Recreation office.  Be familiar with all class participants.
  • Prepare for each session to conduct a complete class for the required length of time. Create lesson plans to assist in implementation of the classes.
  • Complete and submit appropriate records and reports as required by American Red Cross and Owatonna Parks & Recreation.
  • Maintain reasonable availability for parents/guardians or students to ask questions or to discuss concerns.
  • Attend meetings, in-services and trainings as scheduled.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification.  Must be at least 15 years of age by hire date. 

Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous office, safety and other equipment relative to this position which shall include but may not be limited to: Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Rescue Equipment, personal computer, copier, fax machine, communication equipment and related items.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preferably possess current Lifeguard and First Aid Certifications.

Other Qualifications

Hours of Work:  This is a position with scheduled shifts including days, evening, weekends, and holidays. 

This Seasonal Temporary position may be scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturday mornings may be optional.

Physical and Mental Demands: This position works at various facilities and locations including indoor and outdoor, with all types of weather conditions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to seventy-five (75) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
