About the Department

While training for advancement and certification in the Fire Department, assists upper level firefighters and officers in suppression, rescue operations, and all duties associated with assuring fire stations and equipment are ready for all emergency and non-emergency situations.
 
 

Position Duties

Responds to all emergency calls for fire suppression; assists upper level firefighters and officers  fight fires and perform search and rescue; implements all actions necessary to save lives and property; assists with clean up duties including searching for evidence at suspicious fire scenes.
 
Maintains fire equipment and apparatus; assures all equipment on the vehicles is functioning properly; tests the radio; reports any equipment malfunction or missing supplies immediately to the officer in charge.    
 
Participates in continuing study, training, and drill activity to achieve certification, maintain required skills, and attain health and physical strength.
 
Keeps station, grounds and all apparatus clean and neat; cuts grass, paints where needed, washes and scrubs floors, etc. to accomplish these goals.
 
Attends training classes to familiarize firefighters with principles of firefighting as well as with the geography of the area; learns roads and alternative routes to protected areas; learns fire hydrant locations; water system distribution and suppression system availability and capability.
 
May be required to climb to various heights or go below grade in cellars, basins or trenches.
 
May assist with public relations duties, assisting with instruction for various groups in area of fire safety and prevention techniques; learns how to deal with the public and present an effective program of related job nature.
 
Performs other related duties as may be required/assigned.
 
 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
 
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
 
EMT-I, EMT-A, EMT-P certification.

Georgia Firefighter Certification I
   
Licenses and Certifications:

Georgia Firefighter Certification I

Must be able to obtain NPQ Fire Fighter II while in recruit school.

Must be able to obtain Firefighter II certification within 12 months of employment.
 
Must meet all in-house testing and training requirements.
 
Valid Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory MVR.
 
 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
   
 Knowledge of local geography, streets and hospitals/business.
 
 First aid and Emergency Response Training.
 
 Knowledge of mechanics to service and repair equipment or trucks.
 
 Ability to perform strenuous work under adverse conditions for a sustained period of time including the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
 
 Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
 
 Computer use skills desirable.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive.  Incumbent will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
