About the Department

Are you passionate about making a lasting difference in the lives of children and families? Person County Government is currently seeking a dedicated Social Worker III for Foster Care and Adoptions to join our Child Welfare Services Unit within the Department of Social Services. The Child Welfare Services Unit assures that the emotional, social, physical and economic needs of child(ren) in the custody of the agency and in adoptive placements are met. 

This worker is a part of the Child Welfare Services Unit and is responsible for children who are or have been in foster care.   The primary goals of this worker are to work with parents, children and foster parents in trying to reunify the family and to work with families when a permanent plan has been accomplished and after-care services are indicated. When family reunification is not possible, other means of bringing stability to the child’s life will be obtained.  For those children whose physical custody is with   parents, services will be geared towards prevention  of removal of the children from the home.  This worker is responsible for recruiting, making and supervising placements for children whose goal is adoption.  In addition, this worker manages Adoption Assistance cases.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.


Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.


This is a non-exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work;

  • Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative (Child Welfare positions only);

  •  Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work and one year directly related experience;

  • Master's degree in a human services field and one year of directly related experience;

  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field from an accredited college or university and two years directly related experience;

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of directly related experience

Other Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
