Job Summary: The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provides basic information and education about breastfeeding using their own experiences with breastfeeding and utilizing the WIC program. You will encourage breastfeeding and provide a positive environment for new mothers. You will report to the Director. 

PG05 - Start Rate: $15.95/hourly | Schedule: Monday through Friday 8am-4:30pm |

Primary Tasks:

Serve as clinical expert for lactation and breastfeeding for Choctaw Nation WIC participants, provide education on common misinformation, and address concerns of expectant mothers.

Contact prenatal and breastfeeding participants monthly either by phone, mail, or in-person visit.

Provide anticipatory guidance and motivational breastfeeding education materials to prenatal participants.

Counsel prenatal and breastfeeding participants on a one-to-one basis to help them avoid common breastfeeding problems, by phone or in person. 

Provide thorough documentation of each counseling session.

Complete referrals on an as needed basis.

Make hospital and home visits upon request of new mothers, including after hours if requested by the participant. 

Provide support and information to breastfeeding mothers who may need help and encourage them to continue breastfeeding while working or going to school.

Teach the techniques for cleaning and assembly of breast pumps and the expression and storage of breast milk.

Perform other responsibilities as may be required.


 

Required Education, Skills and Experience:  

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience as a breastfeeding mom
  • Former or current WIC participant
  • Willingness to obtain Certified Breastfeeding Educator certification

Qualifications
