DEFINITION
Under the supervision of an appropriately credentialed certificated employee, the site administrator, and the curriculum director, performs a variety of supportive tasks and follow-up activities to reinforce the development of language skills; and do other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Personnel in this job classification may perform any combination of the essential duties shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.
• Assist instructional personnel in the implementation of individual educational plans for pupils experiencing language development needs.
• Tutor individuals and small groups to reinforce and follow-up language development and learning activities.
• Coordinate, schedule, and administer the district and state mandated assessments to determine pupil language proficiency levels.
• Assists in the development and maintenance of a learning environment appropriate to the special needs and language requirements of pupils.
• Prepare instructional materials.
• Maintain individual pupil progress files and other pertinent data, as required.
• Use appropriate equipment and materials to promote the learning process.
• Prepare and submit reports to the site administrator and curriculum director, as required.
• Supervise learning games and other related activities.
• Requisition, store, distribute, and maintain an inventory of educational materials, supplies, and equipment.
• Assist in the parent conference process when requested by the classroom teacher and so directed by the site administrator.
• Use a second language in assisting with bilingual needs, as required by the assignment.
• Provide translation and interpretative services pertaining to both oral and written communication, as required by the assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics;
Student behavior management strategies and techniques;
Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar;
Correct usage of oral and written language in English and Spanish;
Basic mathematics concepts;
Routine record management, storage, and retrieval procedures.
Ability to:
Demonstrate an empathetic, patient, and receptive attitude with pupils experiencing bilingual instructional needs;
Interpret, and follow specific educational plans and language standards;
Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English and Spanish;
Serve as an appropriate language model in English and Spanish;
Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions in English;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with pupils and adults.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
• Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking, or standing for brief periods.
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience working with multi-age children.
Education:
Twelfth grade diploma or the equivalent.*
Passing score on the instructional aide proficiency examination.**
*Candidates applying for positions at Title I funded schools must have an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or the equivalent, or 48 college semester units, or otherwise meet the State and Federal qualifications of the No Child Left Behind guidelines.
**A valid California teaching credential or a passing score on the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) may be accepted in lieu of the instructional aide proficiency test.
Conditions of Employment: Insurability by the District’s liability insurance carrier. Employment is contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, and proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result.

- Twelfth grade diploma or equivalent
- Resume;
- 3 current letters of recommendation
- Proof of meeting the No Child Left Behind requirements (AA Degree or better; or a minimum of 48 semester units; or NCLB Highlly Qualified Test Certificate).
