This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Baker Lake only.
Reporting to the Mental Health and Addiction Program Supervisor. The purpose of this position is to determine community needs for children and youth and identify and provide programs designed to improve the well-bring of young people. The Mental Health Addictions (MHA) Youth Program Facilitator will establish supportive relationships with youth and their families with the goal of empowering them to actively participate in mental health wellness. This position will reinforce, practice and model the mental health strategies of the Department of Health as part of the MHA team. As the successful candidate you will provide general support and advocacy to help children and youth meet their needs by developing and facilitating community-based programs. You will incorporate Inuit knowledge, values, culture and IQ Principles in your work.
The incumbent takes the lead in developing and implement children and youth programs that support mental health wellness by identifying gaps in programs and services for children and youth, encouraging and supporting youth to develop and use personal and community resources to meet their needs. Visit schools and youth Centre to identify program needs and plan for their delivery, supporting community Youth Group Councils by attending meetings, sharing resources, and co-facilitating programs or events when appropriate. Work closely with MHA team to ensure youth programs are relevant to the needs of youth mental health clients. You will also support Mental Health and Addictions service delivery for child and youth clients by engaging with child and youth clients to increase access to services, providing basic risk assessments as directed by the MHA team and assisting at-risk children and youth with getting required support. Also to maintain a working knowledge of child and youth mental health care practices and programs by attending in-service sessions, conducting self-directed studies and pursuing professional development activities, or reviewing current, relevant literature, attending and participating in staff and committee meetings and obtaining certifications for required role competences (i.e.: ASIST)
Qualifications
To be invited for an interview, you must have a certificate in social services, child and/or youth work, mental health, or related field. One year of experience working in child and/or youth work, mental health, or a related field. The contextual knowledge for this position is child and youth mental health and addictions issues, the knowledge of relevant acts, regulations, policies, standards and protocols. Community demographics, culture and history along with Inuit Qaujimatuqangit Principles and Values. Techniques, methods and practices of communication are required to organize and deliver community-based wellness programs for children and youth. A valid driver’s license is an asset; current First Aid and CPR are assets.
Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
