Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor and guidance of the Pre-school Lead Teacher, Teacher, or Master Teacher, the Assistant Teacher, works as a member of a teaching team to promote active learning by planning and implementing developmentally appropriate experiences and by creating an environment in which birth through five-year-old children can experiment, make choices, solve problems and share their experiences with others; assists in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly physical environment.
Requirements / Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Possession of a high school diploma, or its equivalent
- Eligible for a valid Child Development Assistant Permit from the State of California
- Commission on Teacher Credentialing
- Completion with a grade C or better of at least six (6) semester units of college coursework in early childhood education or child development from the following core areas:
-- Child/human growth and development;
-- Child, family and community, or child and family relations;
-- Early Childhood Education curriculum
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of an appropriate, valid California Driver’s License, and evidence of insurability
- CPR Certification appropriate for the age level of assignment within six (6) months of employment
- Passing score on the MCOE Spanish Language Competency Test
Comments and Other Information
This position requires testing which occurs on Tuesdays/Wednesday by invitation only. A brief, verbal Spanish speaking test is also required.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with supervising preschool activities and instruction
- Experience working with special needs children
All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a third party to determine the equivalent U.S. degree and major, and the Foreign Transcript Evaluation must be attached to your application before your application will be considered.
Available Stipends:
Early Learning Program (Head Start) employees shall be required to participate in a generalized overview training in the administration of emergency medication as required by State and Federal Regulations. Assistant Teachers in the Early Learning Program (Head Start) shall be entitled to a stipend of $100 to perform the administration of medication for each month the service is rendered to a student.
