About the Department
Forsyth County Department of Public Health is searching for an LPN to join the School Health Team.
This Full-Time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) School Health (SH) Nurse Extender works 10-months each year. An LPN SH Nurse Extender plays a crucial role in promoting student health and well-being within the educational environment. Key responsibilities include assisting a team of SH Registered Nurses (RNs) to conduct health assessments, administer first aid and medication, perform medical procedures, provide health education to students and staff, collaborating with healthcare providers and families to implement care plans for students with special health needs, maintaining accurate health care records, conducting home visits to follow up with parents about student health concerns at school (a county vehicle would be available to use for making any home visits), and supporting initiatives that promote a healthy school environment. Additionally, the LPN SH Nurse Extender is assigned under a SH RN to assist in the provision of nursing services in a school designated for Exceptional Children (EC) to include the provision of daily nursing services for that EC school in the event of RN absence/vacancy.
This is a 12-month position. A current driver’s license is required in order for the nurse to travel to the school on a daily basis. The nurse must have the ability to make home/hospital visits as needs arise. A county vehicle would be available to use for making these home visits.
As Public Health (PH) employees, all Forsyth County SH nurses are required to work 2-4 Saturdays per year in community health events and immunization clinics to increase vaccine compliance rates for students within the Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools and may be required to provide emergency response in the event of an emergent PH situation
Position Duties
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs;
Considerable knowledge of the LPN scope of practice according to the NC Board of Nursing.
Working knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of public health;
Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health;
Knowledge of available resources and organizations in the community;
Ability to record accurately the services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees;
Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions and;
Ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintain effective working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
Licensed Practical Nurse Requirements:
Possession of a current North Carolina license to practice as a Practical Nurse.
**Requires driving and applicants must have a valid drivers license.**
Other Qualifications
